February 15, 2018
What a wonderful week we have had with our students! I will say that watching our students on Valentine's Day is a very special time! The joy in their smiles and curiosity of what a simple little card may say and show goes beyond words. The creativity the students use in creating their boxes is so precious. Valentine's Day truly showcases the best in our children as we strive to leave no one out on this very special day.
Safety...yes, you may think that I overdo this but safety comes before learning. Please remember that entrance during the school day is only through the front doors and with a drivers license, state ID or passport. Please do not go to a side door and knock for a student or adult to let you in the building. We have worked hard to teach our students not to open doors. You make it very difficult on them if they know you. I do thank you for your help with this.
Please share with neighbors and friends in Lexington School District 1 that now is the time to register for 5 year old kindergarten. Students must be 5 years old by September 1 to register. It is important that we get everyone registered as quickly as possible as this is how the number of teachers needed is determined. So, please, share with your neighbors and friends.
I do hope you have a wonderful 3-day weekend as students do not go to school on Friday, February 16. This is a Professional Development Day for teachers. We will see our Mustangs back on Monday, February 19, as this is being used to makeup for the day we missed earlier this year for the hurricane.
Have a wonderful weekend and take a moment to celebrate the joy your family members bring!
Yours truly,
Jan Fickling, Principal of Midway Elementary

SC Elementary Honor Choir perform this Saturday morning, February 17th at 10:00 a.m
You are invited to come hear the SC Elementary Honor Choir perform this Saturday morning, February 17th at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Columbia. Our own 5th graders Eunwoo Choi, Colsen Guy, Onyeka Idiaghe, and Madison Zuniga will be singing with this amazing 230+ honor choir. Admission is free to the public.
Here is a message from Todd Monsell president of SC Music Educators Association:
We are so very excited that for the first time, our talented young 4th-6th grade honor choir singers will be rehearsing and performing at First Baptist Church Columbia. This beautiful space, just a mile from the convention center, is going to be a wonderful place to showcase our young singers. With choir stalls providing great sight lines for parents, no need for risers, and an acoustic no ballroom can provide, our move to FBC is a win-win. Please feel free to drop by rehearsals anytime and watch the inspirational Mr. Henry Leck (recently retired from the Indianapolis Children's Choir) work his magic with our students. The performance--the 20th in the SCEHC'S history--is at 10AM.

Can you sign up for a 30-minute time slot to read to 2-3 classes? You can bring your own books or books will be available for you to read. Talk to the students about the importance of reading at your job and for pleasure.
Weather permitting, we will read outside in the bus loop but if necessary, inside at the wi-fi café.

Here is some background for Read Across America Day:
It began in 1997 with the idea from an NEA's task to have a pep rally for reading. So the idea of Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday and the joys of reading, was born. Today we expect more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read.
