Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
Welcome back and happy new year!
Now that we are all well rested and have enjoyed our time away, let's regain our focus and continue working on our mission of empowering ALL students to be college-career ready learners, critical thinkers, and contributing citizens. Of this I am sure and my vision is 20/20...this is our time to seize the moment. We have all sides covered with an incredible team of educators who know what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. We have leaders among all ranks that are willing to hold themselves and others accountable. What's even more assured is that we have talented and brilliant children ready to receive high levels of instruction. As we enter a new decade that some are calling the ROARING TWENTIES, I am challenging you to make them the SOARING TWENTIES for our students and district. Lean in and take flight!
With that, I submit the first Captain's Log of the new decade. #2020vision #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot cje

Calling All Teacher Assistants...Would You Like to Almost Double Your Salary?
From MDE: The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) invites aspiring teachers to apply to be a member of the next cohort of the Mississippi Teacher Residency (MTR) program, which is a two-year commitment that combines coursework and on-the-job training to prepare prospective educators for the teaching profession. Applications for the 2020-21 school year will be accepted January 3 through February 3, 2020.
The MTR program is part of a statewide strategy to expand and diversify the teacher pipeline, so that all students have teachers who are well-prepared, appropriately licensed and can serve as role models. It is specifically designed for candidates who want to become a teacher but are not currently enrolled in an educator preparation program.
MTR applicants must have an associate degree or at least 60 college credits from a degree program with a minimum 2.75 grade point average. Men and women of color, veterans from the Armed Forces, and junior college graduates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Teacher residents will complete a two-year undergraduate elementary education and special education program while working alongside an experienced teacher mentor in one of four participating districts. The project is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Each MTR Resident will receive a full degree scholarship to a selected MTR-sponsored university; support in Praxis and Foundations of Reading licensure examinations; one-on-one teacher mentors; and ongoing professional development throughout MTR program.
The application can be found at https://www.mdek12.org/OTL/MTR or call (601) 359-1743 for more information.
Exemplary Inclusion Program Award Information and Application
Last year, we brought to our community the Exemplary Inclusion Program Award for our efforts at Pass High. K-8 principals have been asked to apply for this honor to show the state other marks of eXcellence in this area.
From MDE: MDE is currently accepting applications for the Exemplary Inclusion Program Award. The Exemplary Inclusion Program Award was designed to provide special recognition to schools that, to the greatest extent possible, provide full inclusion of children with disabilities in all aspects of academic and extra-curricular activities. This recognition supports programs under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Special recognition will be awarded to one elementary school, one middle school, and to one high school. The attached application package must be received at the address listed below by January 17, 2020, to meet the timelines for the selection process.
The Mississippi Special Education Advisory Panel will select and award recipients in April 2020. The State Board of Education will recognize the award recipients at the May 2020 board meeting. All entries are due to the Office of Special Education by January 17, 2020. If additional information or support is needed, please contact Armerita Tell at (601) 359-3498 or atell@mdek12.org.

BE KIND
Kindness Week coming! Just before we left for Christmas, Cameron Schwartz emailed me to inform me of a wonderful example of our students being contributing citizens. With permission from the coaches, the girls' soccer team took it upon themselves to provide toys to needy teens by partnering with Hope Haven in Bay St. Louis. When I asked if he would share a photo of the exchange; he indicated that the children did not do it for recognition but because it was the right thing to do. How awesome it is to work in a place where our children follow our lead by giving back to others - not just during Kindness Week, but throughout the year. Let us remember to be kind and to pass kindness to others. Thank you for being such wonderful eXamples of love and kindness; it is contagious!
Thanks for the reminder, DES.
