Notes from the Principal
Dear JWE Friends and Families,
It is hard to believe we have already finished the first trimester of school. As we look back, it has been incredible to see the growth of our students both academically and socially. It is truly rewarding to see the look on a student’s face when they master a challenging concept or share the excitement of meeting a new friend at John Wetten.
By now you should have been able to access your child’s school report card for the first term. The report card is intended to show how your child is progressing toward meeting grade-level standards. It is important to note that all students demonstrate progress at different rates. Our school recognizes the unique gifts and talents each student brings and how they make our school a special place.
We will continue to provide the best educational opportunities for each of our students. Our school Site Council is currently developing a continuous school improvement plan that will be shared with you in the coming months. The purpose is to prioritize the needs of our students within our school and develop an action plan with measurable results. We will be asking for your feedback on this plan as it is important in capturing the needs of our school and students. Once complete, it will be implemented over the next several years. As 2023 comes to a close in a few short weeks, we have a lot to look forward to as a school community and wish you all the best!
Sincerely,
John McAndrews
Principal

Goodbye JWE
I am excited to share that I will be retiring from my position as the JWE Head Secretary at the end of December. Our school has seen many changes over the past 12 years but one thing that has been consistent is the JWE Family. This encompasses our students, families, community members and staff. You have been kind and generous and I just want to say Thank You for your support! I will be moving to South Carolina in March and will miss my JWE family very much.
My replacement will be Lori Medlin. She comes to us from Oregon City School District and is very excited to start her new adventure with JWE. She will start on Dec. 11th so please stop by the office and welcome her with all the support you have given me.
Sincerely,
Linda Alberico
JWE Head Secretary
Parent Faculty Organization (PFO) News
JWE Parents and Guardians!!!
First off, congratulations to the 1st Graders on being the grade to bring the most money in during the Move-A-Thon in October!!! They won a grade-wide movie night!!
The PFO will be hosting a Winter Ball dance on January the 12th! The doors open at 5:15 and the dance will run from 5:30-7:30. We ask that parents and guardians PLEASE supervise their children during the dance, this is not a drop off event. The dance will only be open to JWE students. There will be snacks for purchase (cash only). We can’t wait to see you all there!
Happy Holiday’s and see you in the New Year,
The John Wetten PFO
TAG Referrals
Are you interested in getting your child evaluated for the Talented and Gifted Program this year? All parent referrals need to complete this TAG referral form and have it turned in to the school by December 15, 2023 to be considered for this school year. Please contact Becky Waverly at waverlyr@gladstone.k12.or.us for more information.
Student Accident Insurance
Accidents happen... don't get burdened by the cost!
At Gladstone School District, we prioritize the health and safety of our students. Accidents can still happen during sporting events, field trips, or everyday fun at school or home. Necessary medical care can be expensive and current medical coverage could limit options for care. While we do not assume responsibility for costs associated with accidents, we do offer several student accident insurance plans available for voluntary purchase that may help alleviate costs in the event of an accident.
These plans can vary from 24/7 coverage anywhere to limited coverage and can allow your child to access your choice of doctors or hospitals without restrictions. Gladstone School District has partnered with K&K Insurance Group to offer our families voluntary student accident insurance coverage.
For more information or to enroll your child in student accident insurance, please see the links on our district website.
Morning Drop Off Safety
Parents please be reminded of these safety protocols when dropping off students in the morning:
- Pull up as far as you can before dropping off your children
- Drop off only at the curb (not in the parking lot)
- Do NOT pass around cars that are taking a little longer to get a child out of the car
There have been a few close calls lately and we don't want anyone to get hurt. Thank you for your understanding and support.
No Pets on Campus
Please be reminded that pets are not allowed on campus during the school day. If you are walking up to pick up your student at dismissal, we ask that you do not bring your pets in to the loading zone (even if they are on a leash). This is for your protection as well as all the other students and adults who are in that area. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Gladstone Food Pantry
On the second Thursday of each month, the Gladstone Food Pantry has a special shopping time from 1230-130p for GSD families only. Please watch the district newsletter for a reminder each month. Families will need to bring proof of enrollment to qualify for this special time. Please see the attached flyer for the December shopping date. The pantry will be open every week in December at the regular time.
Gladstone Shows Up
Did you know? 90% attendance may seem like an acceptable level of attendance, but the reality is that 90% attendance means that your child will miss 17 days of the school year which is nearly 4 weeks!!!!
End of Day Transportation Changes - Walker, Pick-Up or Bus Rider
Is your child scheduled to be be a Walker, Pick-Up or Bus Rider? Here's the difference:
Walker - required to leave campus without adult supervision.
Pick-Up - required to stay on campus to be picked up by an authorized adult
-- Car Pick Up is when someone will be driving through the turn around
-- Walk Up is when someone parks and walks up to the school
Bus Rider - required to ride the bus home or to designated location
Every student has a pre-determined plan for the end of the each day. If you have any change to your child's end of day transportation plan please email us at jwetransportation@gladstone.k12.or.us no later than 12 noon (M, T, Th, F) or 11:00 a.m. (W). We will reply to your message by 2:00 p.m. or 1:00 (W) to confirm receipt of your message. Please include the student's name, teacher and details of the plan.
