What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is the condition of feeling uneasy or worried about what may happen.
- occasional anxiety is a natural response to life events
Example:
Feeling anxious about an important class presentation.
What causes Anxiety?
Things that cause Anxiety are:
- Insecurity
- Fear
- self consciousness
- Worry
- Panic
- Stress
- Depression
Anxiety vs Depression
Anxiety is the short term feeling of panic, while depression is long term and more life threatening. Anxiety causes the heart rate to climb while depression is a constant feeling sadness that last over a long period of time.
Techniques used to reduce Anxiety
Some techniques are:
- Using stress management
- Using refusal skills
- Planning ahead
- Thinking positively
3. Find out what cause anxiety and try to find solutions
Ways NOT to cope with anxiety:
- Alcohol and drugs
- This produces a temporary, false sense of relaxation but can cause other physical, mental/ emotional and social or legal problems

Teresa Scanlan the Miss American of 2011 couldn't handle the pressure and anxiety which got to her during the competition which made her gain weight and feel insecure. She didn't have the same religious and political views as the commentator and so she was called several names like lazy, fat, dumb, and stupid. This lead to thoughts and attempts of suicide. All because of the anxiety and stress of being in the competition.
