Parent Summit 101
Introduction to Projects
As we continue the effort to get parents informed about Summit Learning, the research behind it and how they can keep track of their student’s progress this week the focus is on Projects.
Projects are the major component of classroom in Summit Learning designed to help prepare students for life after high school. Teachers guide students through projects focused on real-world skills to apply their content knowledge. Projects culminate in a Final Product for which students receive Cognitive Skills grades based on a school-wide rubric that is designed to support and show student growth from 9th to 12th grade.
Self-Regulation
This week RISE mentors and teachers are continuing to teach students about the 16 Habits of Success. This week marks a transition to focusing on SELF REGULATION. We are approaching the end of first quarter. Students have Focus Area and Project deadlines that will come due from now until September 27th. It is important that we help students with their Self Regulation skills that will help them in high school and beyond. True Self Regulation means Directing and maintaining attention and emotions by:
Maintaining focus on what I'm doing
Identifying when I'm distracted and bring my focus back
Resisting a short-term temptation in order to get a longer-term benefit
Changing or sustaining my emotional state when desired, independently or with help
As we work to help students learn to self regulation at school, below is a link which can give you some helpful background information to become an ally in helping your child.
How Can We Help Kids With Self Regulation?
Mr. Mark Pressley

The priority Cohort of students is Frankfort High School Seniors and the Cohort 7th graders at Second Street School. Mr. Pressley works with Senior students transitioning to Postsecondary Education, whether it's Certification, one year, two year or four year post-secondary education. He gives lessons and other activities to seniors to help them transition. He is also a College Career Coach at SSS who will give lessons as well to help 7th graders and beyond prepare.
Before coming to FHS he was a transition Coordinator for East Kentucky University. He had 51 counties and worked with Seniors with IEPs and 504 plans and transitioning from high school to College.
He coaches track and field and will coach the FHS Girls Track Team this year Pressley says, " I've been involved in track and field for 38 years and have coached for 29 years. I have 2 state titles, one runner up, one AAU title, 8 Region Championships, 2 District Championships and 27 Division 1 signees. Currently at National USATF Officials. My specialty is jumps, sprints and relays."

Where do you live?
He and his family moved here from Chicago, IL and live in Richmond, Kentucky. When asked about his family, Pressley says, "My two rocks Chase (Slim), Freshman at JB School of Engineering at U of L and Parks (Thick), Junior student-athlete at FHS. I love them more than they will ever know. Dr. Sheila Pressley. my lovely wife of 22 years, is the Dean of Health Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University."
In his free time, he says, "I'm a Geek, so always involved in technology."
He is a professional fine artist and graphic designer so he is always doodling with design and paints. His son Parks always tells him he needs to paint more, it calms him down. Pressley says, "
I want to start another series of artwork and have more gallery shows. I was a featured artist and sold three of my original pieces, it was a Great night!" He is always involved in track and field and traveling spending time with family and friends.
He says about FHS, "They welcome me from day one. I come from a big family and I could see family here at FHS (Family High School). I believe the Summitt Learning System better prepares you for Postsecondary Education. Reminds me of a syllabus in College. They welcome me and my baby boy like family. Mike drop!!!"

It's impossible to overstate the influence of Ancient Rome and Greece on our modern-day society; seeing monuments from those civilizations is a profound experience. From the Colosseum to the Parthenon to the archaeological sites as Pompeii, Epidaurus, and Mycenae, give your student the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of those who set the stage for the development of Western culture.
