In Case You Missed It:
I apologize for neglecting to formally introduce Sgt. Larry Whitaker to our school family as our new school resource officer. He has jumped right in, embraced our school family, and worked with our Admin Team to ensure we have a safe school. Sgt. Whitaker worked at East Lee in the same capacity until he became a detective. We are fortunate he enjoyed being a SRO more!
Heather Hughes will be leaving us in January at the end of the semester. Many of you know she began in real estate last year. Her business is booming, but she needs to find some balance for her family.
Thank you to Alison Poole and Anna Whalen and our Sweet 16 club for planning our first school dance. We had a record number of tickets sold which concerned me greatly on Friday and I put the message out for help. And as always, our school family came through and assisted wherever needed to ensure we had a safe and fun afternoon for our kids! We were able to get through our car rider lines in a record breaking time of 30 minutes.Only three kids had to call and remind their parents to come pick them up. All were gone and everything was cleaned up at 6:47 pm. Thank you to everyone that helped (Alison Poole & daughter, Anna Whalen & husband, Malisa Anderson, Misty Thompson, Gail Vaughan, Sarah Yoder, Kim Vaughn, Brian Caldwell, Tomitha Zimmerman, Catherine Sweeney, Kim Ashby, Ashley Inman, Bonnie Marshall, Christina Reed, Kevin Degon, Jennifer Rubinosky, Casey Giambalvo, Lauren Black &son, Rena Szakaly & son,Jordan Burch & children, Heather Hughes, Christa Gettis, Annette Register, Tonnette Wicker, Sherell Stevenson, Joanna Perkins & son, and Evan Roush). *If I missed anyone please let me know! We want to make sure to acknowledge all the help!
I went to dinner with my husband and friends afterwards and was bragging on how well this event went with all the kids. A friend asked how do I get staff to help and if I required people to do so many dances or events. I stated that it wasn't necessary because we are a big family and help whenever and wherever we can. They were impressed and my heart was full of pride. SGLA will be hosting the next dance on Friday, October 25.
I received validation multiple times last week that we are living and succeeding in our vision to "provide a caring and safe learning environment in which all students are able to maximize individual potential and are prepared to meet and overcome everyday challenges of education, work, and life". I heard stories from parents of how SanLee has helped and enabled their child to grow and mature in a way they never thought capable. One in particular was a mom of a son that is on our cross-country team. At the first match he came in last. They were so proud that he even finished because he'd never been a runner and never participated in competitive sports. Mom said he told her he wanted to quit but kept thinking about keep moving forward quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. we have on our wall at SLMS. WOW! If that doesn't speak to the power of words, I don't know what does. We had a child that has not experienced success in other schools come to the dance on Friday night and have a fabulous time. I know some days are very hard and it feels as if you are not making headway or progress with a child or a class, but please know you are who that child needs right now, you are making an impact, and don't ever give up. Keep moving...“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” Don't loose sight of the important work you are doing by the frustration you are feeling. Keep moving forward.
