Welcome Back Hawks!
Anacortes Middle School Newsletter August 2021
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Students:
The summer has passed quickly and what a beautiful summer it has been. We hope that all of you have been able to enjoy the outdoors and took advantage of Mother Nature. The staff at AMS is very excited to get our new and returning students into the building to start their middle school experience.
It is hard to believe that our halls have been empty of our whole school for over 18 months. We are excited to have our middle school students back gracing the halls and the classrooms!
We can’t stress enough the importance of being involved and engaged during the middle school years. The importance of parents asking questions of their students, communicating with teachers, and student involvement is paramount. Students at AMS are expected to maintain excellent attendance, be engaged in their education, and involved in school activities/athletics. These habits will help the transition to high school to be as smooth as possible.
We will have two available drop off and pick up locations for parents who are dropping their students to school by car. Please use the upper parking lot of the middle school and the additional location will be available on the south-side of our building on 24th Street. There is a loop around for exiting. Please do not use the front parking lot as that is our drop off for buses. Students will be able to enter the building from the front doors.
Students will be able to enter the building at 7:45. We will be providing breakfast free of charge to our students. For breakfast, only students who are eating will be allowed in the commons. All other students will be able to be in the lower hallway. We will have masks available for students who may have forgotten theirs or need a new one.
Students/parents will no longer need to do daily attestations. If your student has the following symptoms, please keep your student home from school: Fever (100.4°F) or chills • Cough • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing • Fatigue • Muscle or body aches • Headache • Recent loss of taste or smell • Sore throat • Congestion or runny nose • Nausea or vomiting • Diarrhea.
We know we are not quite back to our "normal" routines of school just yet, but we are excited to have all of our students back in the building together everyday. Thank you to our students for continuing to be awesome and flexible, and to our families for being supportive and understanding during these unpredictable times.
Go HAWKS!

Important Open House Information!
AMS Open Houses are scheduled!
Students will be able to get their picture taken, checkout their Chromebook (students will be asked to sign in with their ASD login during the checkout process), pick up schedules, and tour the school! There are no technology or mealtime fees this year (however, a la carte items will be available at lunchtime for purchase). If you'd like to participate in a sport ($35 fee) or purchase a yearbook ($25 cost) you can pay during that time or online. Please CLICK HERE to be redirected to pay for items online, including yearbooks, PE uniforms, etc. which will allow you to skip the lines at open house! PE uniforms ($20 fee) are required for students in PE classes and fees can be paid for as well, but the uniforms will be handed out during PE class. We will have sample sizes for reference.
We are still limiting the number of people in the building so we ask that only students and guardians attend -- no siblings please.

Mask Requirement Per WA State Department of Health
Indoor Mask Requirements All school personnel, volunteers, visitors, and students must wear cloth face coverings, or an acceptable alternative (e.g., surgical mask or clear face shield with a drape), at school when indoors in accordance with the Secretary of Health’s Mask Order. Staff who are verified to be fully vaccinated may be indoors without masks when students are not present or expected to be present. School districts must support compliance with mask requirements among staff, students, volunteers, visitors, and families.
Outdoor Mask Requirements Per the Secretary of Health’s Mask Order, face coverings are not required outdoors, regardless of vaccination status. Masks are strongly recommended for unvaccinated individuals when outdoors in crowded spaces or when in close contact with people from outside their household for a sustained period of time, as the risk of COVID-19 infection increases with the duration and closeness of contact between individuals. Schools should support students and staff who choose to wear a mask or face covering outdoors.
What Is Schoology?
Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online, provide a safe forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects, and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized and it keeps the class connected. A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:
- The classes your child is enrolled in.
- Your child’s upcoming assignments.
- School and class announcements.
- Daily grades. Final grades can still be found in Skyward.
Shell Fun Run
Every year the Anacortes Schools Foundation and Shell Puget Sound Refinery partner up and host the Shell Fueling Education Fun Run, and though the race is going virtual this year, the Anacortes School District Grant Competition is back!
