Mrs. O'Rourke's Panther Press
From the week of 8/27 and for the week of 9/4
This newsletter is intended to be read by both parents and students in our class.
Thanks to the Grace Family for The Inquisitor's Tale, The Abu-Salih Family for Breakout and Greenglass House, the Vanlandinghams for The Trials of Apollo-The Dark Prophecy, and The Schenck Family and their pets for a small group set of House Arrest. These are such meaningful new books to get into the hands of our readers!
I added crayola markers to the wish list because the kiddos told me that all of the "good colors" are dried out. Yellow, brown, and orange aren't their favorites for projects, I'm guessing. *wink*.
Every bit of generosity is appreciated!!
Pasta Bowl
It's that time of year to collect pasta at HIJH for the Annual PASTA BOWL Collection. Every year we fill 5+ large bins with pasta, and we need to make this an annual time of giving. Please stop by or send your child with Pasta starting today through the morning of 9/10. These bins will be picked up Monday, 9/10/18, in the morning. September 10th is also the HIJH Fund Raiser deadline. We REALLY appreciate your support throughout the entire year for such worthy endeavors. Have a great upcoming Holiday Weekend!

Vocabulary
This year, on a biweekly basis, students will be introduced to 8 Greek/Latin roots and stems as well as some challenging and colorful vocabulary words that we often see in reading material for grades 6+. The students will actually "harvest" their own vocabulary words as they seek out words related to the roots and their meanings. We then form our study lists from some of the words that our students find. Often, our words will also connect to what we are studying in social studies or language arts. It will be important that students learn how to spread out their studying over the 2 week period and not get in the habit of trying to cram. I advise students each day how to chunk their study time in hopes that this helps them with effective time management and true mastery of the new words.
