Helping to Ease Your Child's Mind with Mindfulness Activities
Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a helpful tool for children and adults. It is about focusing on how you feel in the present moment. It's not worrying about what's happened in the past or thinking about the future. This is great for kids who have a hard time focusing. Research shows that practicing mindfulness can help reduce anxiety and helps with regulating emotions.
Here are some strategies to try:
Grounding - This is a helpful exercise when you have a lot of things on your mind. You notice in the present moment the things around you using your five senses.
5 things you can see
4 things you can hear
3 things you can touch
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
Dragon Breathing
Clasp your hands together and put them under your chin. Take a deep breath in and bring your elbows out looking up towards the sky. As you breathe out, let your elbows go back down to your sides.
Finger Tracing
Lay your hand flat on a table and trace your fingers with your other hand. Breathe in as you trace up your finger and breathe out as you trace down your finger.
Rainbow Walk
Go for a walk around your house or outside with a grown-up. Try to find things that are each of the colors of the rainbow.
Find something red
Find something orange
Find something yellow
Find something green
Find something blue
Find something purple
