It is important that we can recognize all the sounds in the English language to be able to read well. English has 44 different speech sounds which is more than many other languages.
Once we know our sounds and the alphabet, we can begin to put them together to read words.
We learn phonics when our teachers help us to sound out words and know which letters and combinations of letters make which sounds. When we become good at this skill, we can read and spell many words.
Now that we've learned about the connections between sounds, letters, and words, we can put it all together by reading sentences and books!
The more we practice sounding out words, the easier it will become to recognize both new and familiar words on the page.

We also encourage our students to dress up too! Lets ROCK OUR SCHOOL on Friday October 29!
Veteran's Day is just around the corner & We are excited to honor our Veterans!
Veteran's day is just around the corner and we would love to invite all Veterans you know to our outdoor parade. Do you have a family member, loved one or close family friend that is a veteran. Invite them to participate in the parade. Due to current restrictions for guests in the building we wanted to find another way to celebrate and recognize our veterans.
Veteran's will drive around the building in their cars as our students recognize and celebrate each of them for their dedication to our country. We invite each Veteran to dress in uniform and to decorate their cars.
Thank you for helping us as we celebrate and recognize each veteran for their service!

Safety Update @ AIS West! As you enter at Door 1:
Visitors will utilize an intercom and camera system to gain entry to our school office from right outside of door 1. This system is located to the left of the front door. Please be prepared to identify yourself and provide a reason for your visit when you arrive.
Once you do this, the front office staff will then be able to grant access to visitors who have a reason and purpose for requesting access to the building. The far set of doors on the left are the doors you need to enter. Of those two doors, it is the door on the right that physically unlocks.
Thank you for your patience in adapting to this updated, more secure and safe system for all who are entering our schools.
No Cell Phone Use @ Intermediate School:
** If there is an emergency and a student needs to reach you, they will be permitted to use the school phone.
** if you need to leave a message for your child, please call the front office and they will make sure your child is given the message by the end of the day.
In the event they are to have their cell phone out of their locker, the following steps will be taken by the teacher:
- First time- warning: the teacher will ask them to go put it in their locker and share that next time it will be confiscated.
- Second time- The teacher will ask the student to give them the phone and the teacher holds the phone until end of the day. The teacher returns the phone at the end of the day when the student gets on the bus/ goes to their car in car rider line and reminds the student of the school wide expectations. This will be documented as a disciplinary referral and parents will be notified.
- Third time and beyond: The teacher will ask the student to give them the phone and the teacher will take the phone to the front office for a parent/guardian to pick up the phone. The teacher will communicate with the parent to inform the parent that the phone has been out three or more times and now they must pick it up the phone from the front office. This will be documented as a disciplinary referral.
*** If students choose to bring their phones or other devices to school, Avon Schools are not responsible for lost or stolen devices or personal belongings.***
