Department PLCs
A PLC, or Professional Learning Community, for us is when educators come together to talk about how they teach, and the results they get. Our goal at these meetings is to learn from each other by watching each other work.
Lois Brown Easton shares that in PLCs teachers:
•Design lessons, assessments, or units together
•Critique lessons, assessments, or units together
•Share articles and other professional resources and read and discuss books
•Visit each other's classrooms to examine instructional approaches
•Work together to examine student work samples and assessments in order to better understand student strengths and weaknesses and improve instruction and other aspects of learning.
•Provide moral support and encouragement to each other in trying new ideas.
It is important to remember that powerful professional learning communities honor the professionalism, expertise, experiences and skills of staff; establish a culture of quality by encouraging discussion about what quality looks like, both in terms of the educators' work and the students' work; and slows the pace of schooling, providing time for inquiry and reflections that promote learning and application.
