King Leopold II claimed the "Congo Free State" for personal property and used the natives as miners and rubber tappers. There were no laws that protected natives or their land, resulting in the death of many.
Belgium had control over the Congo from 1908-1960.

Leopold wanted to exploit the Congo Free State for its natural resources to make money for personal gain.
By public force. The unknowing Congolese were forced into harmful work, basically the slaves of Leopold.
