Clarification on Closing Schools During COVID
Hello D103 Families,
COVID is spreading throughout Lake County and is showing up in our community. We have students and staff who have contracted COVID and are isolating at home. We have received questions regarding the district closing school and conducting remote learning for a period of time. Currently, there are only a couple of reasons allowed by the State that we can close school to offer e-learning/remote learning, and it would be for a very short period of time:
Adaptive Pause - The district must coordinate with the Lake County Health Department to determine if the spread of COVID is occurring while students are at school. This pause would only be used to determine close contacts and who would need to be quarantined/excluded. E-learning/remote learning would occur during this time for all students. The pause would take between 1-3 days and only close contacts and individuals identified with positive cases of COVID would continue to be quarantined/excluded. All other students would return to school.
School Closure due to emergency/staffing shortage - The district may close schools for emergency reasons (loss of power, extreme weather conditions, lack of staff able to be in buildings). When schools are closed, the district has the option to offer e-learning/remote learning for up to 5 days per year in lieu of extending the school year. Any additional days the district closes school would be non-attendance days and e-learning/remote learning would not occur. Additional days must be added to the end of the school year.
We are consistently monitoring the COVID situation in our buildings. At this time, we have just enough staff to cover our buildings. As always, this may change at a moment's notice. We will have more information regarding the status of COVID after we receive our results from this week’s PCR testing. We will update you if we need to make any changes to attendance at school.
Thank you for your continued support as we navigate this pandemic.
Sincerely,
Scott Warren, Ed.D
Superintendent of D103 Schools
Reporting Student Absences
If your child or someone in your house is experiencing COVID symptoms, please get a COVID test. It is imperative that students who are ill stay home so they do not infect anyone else at school.
If the COVID test is positive, please reach out to covidhotline@d103.org or call 847-457-9314. When reporting an absence for other illnesses, contact the school nurse.
Please provide the following information:
Student’s first name and last name
Child’s grade
Parent email and phone number
Child's symptoms
If your child tests positive for COVID, provide the date of the test and type of COVID test administered
Thank you for your cooperation in helping everyone stay healthy.
How to Sign Up for Weekly COVID Testing
D103 offers free weekly PCR testing through O’Hare Clinical labs. Testing is voluntary and requires consent to participate. We encourage everyone to sign up to take the weekly test, whether your student is vaccinated or not. If a child were to test positive, your child would need to isolate and follow the guidelines listed in the IDPH Interim Exclusion Guidance. If your child is found to be a close contact, District 103 will consult with the Lake County Health Department and follow the options listed in the IDPH Revised Public Guidance for Schools.
For information on testing, please refer to the below documents.
Consent Form - Please log into your child’s Unified Classroom account to access the digital form to give consent for both the PCR and BinaxNow tests. This short video will provide you with step-by-step directions for completing the form.
Watch the brief videos in Google Docs or on our D103 YouTube channel for instructions on using the PCR testing
