SHAPE America Conference in St. Louis The SHAPE America Conference was amazing! There was so much passion for quality Physical Education displayed throughout the week! A major topic of discussion was physical literacy. This term has recently been included in National Standards. Check out Physical Education Canada for a great description of what physical literacy is. The rest of the world has embraced this term and now we (SHAPE America) are joining in. It's important to note that physical literacy is not a term to describe Physical Education itself, but rather Physical Education is a key component of being/becoming a physically literate person. This will help Coaches, Recreation Leaders, and Physical Education Specialist to have a common language and similar goals for individuals/students we work with. | Tweet for Physical Education!Twitter has become a wonderful resource for my professional development as a teacher. I have learned a lot since joining. There is a #pechat every other Monday at 7:00pm. This event is full of great conversation about hot topics within our field and innovative teaching ideas. Find me here (@collinbrooksie). Every month I will be sharing links to some of the great information I find on Twitter. Here is what I've found this month:
| Member Spotlight: Cheryl Wardell Recently Cheryl Wardell (@Cheryl_Wardell) was a finalist for the SHAPE America National Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year. This is what she had to say about her experience: "It is hard to express in words how much being Northwest District elementary PE Teacher of the Year has meant to me. After being named Oregon TOY I was reluctant to apply for NW District. Besides the fact it meant writing 5 essays, I was sure it was a long shot. The ride began when I attend the NW District conference last August in Montana. It was a refreshing time to connect with many excellent teachers and bring back new ideas, even picking up skateboarding at the age of 50! The opportunity to attend the AAHPERD conference for the first time in twenty years is an experience that will change and enhance my teaching forever. I learned how isolated we are in Oregon. I have always attended local conferences but was able to see amazing presenters from all over the US. Twitter became my new “teaching partner” and thanks to Collin Brooks I am learning to manage it. My head was ready to burst by day four with new ideas. I am so inspired and excited to collaborate with new friends and my new TOY family! Thank you Oregon Shape for the opportunity!" |

- Technology in PE: Check out this amazing presentation made by Naomi Hartl (@MissHartl)
on the use of technology in Physical Education class. She is an awesome teacher from Saskatchewan Canada. - Gonoodle: A great website for brain breaks (@GoNoodle)
- Project your mobile device in your gym: (via The PE Geek). Airserver is amazing and inexpensive.

We’re Moving!
It seems appropriate to report that the Oregon SHAPE Fall Conference is MOVING! In addition to being packed full of great movement activities, we’re also moving to a new date this year. We realize that fewer teachers have the option to attending professional conferences during Statewide Teacher Inservice day, since many school districts plan their own events. Therefore, we have decided to move the conference to the Saturday prior to inservice day.
Please plan on joining us at Linfield College on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2014.
If you are interested in submitting a session proposal, please use the form provided here. The Linfield venue provides opportunity for holding sessions in two gyms, a multipurpose/dance room, fieldhouse, fitness facility, and pool. Several fields are also available for physical activity presentations. In addition, we have three classrooms and a computer lab at your disposal. Special arrangements can be made if any presenters would like access to anatomy or physiology labs as well.
More details about the conference will be forthcoming in the next month. If you have questions about any aspects of the conference, you may contact Dawn Graff-Haight, the Oregon SHAPE conference manager, at dghaight@linfield.edu.

See you in Seattle!
