SHS Student Services Updates
Quarter 2
Counseling Department
Grade Level Updates
- Last week, in ATL, 9th graders discussed goals. "Are you taking steps to get to where you want to be?"
- In November, we will focus on being “principled”, which is one of the IB learner profiles. As we focus on this trait, think about how this can be applied to academic progress and relationships with others.
- Quarter 2 Tips for Success: Keep trying and giving your best effort, attempt all assignments and work even if you don't fully understand, and if you’re having trouble, reach out to your teachers.
- We know school feels different right now. Ms. Ladd and Ms. Salmon are here for you! Feel free to reach out through Schoology for support.
10th Grade (Mr. Molina):
- Interested in learning more about the IB Career Program and Diploma Program? Be on the lookout for a parent night during this quarter.
- The personal project is underway, be sure to check in with your students to ask about their progress. If support is needed, the ATL teachers are a great resource.
- During the quarter, Mr. Molina will be focusing on programming about graduation requirements and graduation pathways.
11th Grade (Ms. Zielger):
- The ASVAB exam will be given to juniors who opted in on Friday 11/6. This exam can help you meet the PSR competency for Graduation Pathways.
- The PSAT/SMSQT will be Jan 26th. Juniors will take the SAT Exam on April 13th. Please check Schoology for important message about PSAT and SAT prep opportunities.
- Reach out to Ms. Ziegler regarding grades and/ or credit concerns. Communicate with teachers now if you have concerns with their classes as we still have a few months left before the semester ends and grades finalize. Remember that being present and engaged is a huge key to success.
12th Grade (Ms. Claude):
- The ASVAB exam will be given to seniors needing to satisfy graduation pathways on Friday November 6th. This exam can help you meet the PSR competency for Graduation Pathways, it is very important those who were notified are in attendance.
- Ms. Claude has been working on sending senior transcripts to colleges/universities through Naviance. Be sure to maintain academic success throughout the school year as colleges and universities will also review final transcripts, not only what was summitted this fall.
- Individual credit checks for the fall are underway. If there are questions about graduation status or credits needed, please reach out to Ms. Claude.
Your Future Center
The Future Center has been hard at work this school year supporting seniors with the college application process. Information has been shared directly with seniors through Theory of Knowledge and Personal and Professional Skills classes. Open Teams meetings have been available to seniors at least two times a week for additional support and multiple workshops have been offered as well. Looking ahead the Future Center will begin offering more opportunities for students at other grade levels to engage in programming to begin understanding their 3E options.
We’d like to congratulate the following students on their college acceptances!

Atlas Social Wellness App:
During ATL the week of October 26th we will be introducing a new wellness app to our students to help support them during this challenging time we are all living through.
Atlas is a new social app specifically designed to support student mental health and
wellness. Atlas helps people take care of themselves while deepening their
relationships with the people in their lives who they truly care about.
We provide users short podcasts that help alleviate stress, manage academic
pressure, develop healthy relationships, and get better sleep.
ESL: English as a Second Language
EVERY student in the English as Second Language program has a level between 1 and 5 to describe their academic English proficiency. The different supports that MUST be offered to the student depend on the level of that student. This is a requirement of the law. It is important for you and your student to know their WIDA level so that you know what supports to ask for as a family. Examples of the supports by level are below.
- ALL STUDENTS REGARDLESS OF LEVEL: Text to speech, bilingual dictionary, extra time on assignments and assessments, individual/small group instruction.
- Levels 1 and 2: Read aloud tests, Modified/Simplified Tests, Oral responses, classroom buddy.
- Levels 3 and 4: Eligible for additional supports depending on their reading or writing level.
