Union Canal Connection
December
From The Principal's Desk
Dear Parents/Guardians:
November went so quick at Union Canal! We are officially one-quarter through the school year and have settled into the 2022-23 school year. This past month a lot of new learning has taken place along with partnering with parents to help our students grow. We thank you for your support and collaboration in helping make Union Canal the best elementary school in Lebanon! Please read below what has taken place!
We held parent teacher conferences last week and we were thankful for all of our parents who came and met with us. Making connections is the best way to help our students. As a parent if you feel that your need any support with your child please connect with us! Often, it takes a village to raise a child and we are there as part of that village to support you. Parent-Teacher Conferences happen only once a year, however, we are always here to connect with to help your child grow.
Our Falcon Families met this month and talked about Kindness. Our falcon families discussed what kindness is and what it looks/feels like in action. Each month our families will meet together to discuss and share the highlighted monthly character trait to help support our students growing their individual values and foundational belief system.
We will continue our journey this month pushing our students academically and socially. School wide we will have our Elves Magicland hosted by our PTT where students can purchase gifts for family and friends. Please see more information outlined in this newsletter. We will celebrate winter and learn about traditional holidays with a "Polar Express" day on December 22 prior to leaving for break. Many individual classrooms will have special days and events on the calendar please aware of anything that may come home from your child's teacher. REMINDER: School is closed Friday, December 23 - Friday, December 30. School will resume Monday, January 2.
Don't forget...Volunteering! We would love to find ways for you to volunteer during the school day. This may not be in your child's classroom or with them but you still can be of great support! Call us to find out how you can volunteer to help our staff with our students in the building. Specific areas include, cafeteria, hallways, office, and playgrounds. If you have your volunteer clearance through CLSD you can support our school in many ways. Find out how you can receive this clearance here.
As always if you have any questions or concerns about our school or operations please do not hesitate to reach out to me via phone 717-270-7227 or email bmcginty@clsd.k12.pa.us .

Elves Magicland
Union Canal Parents/Guardians,
Our students will have the opportunity to shop for Holiday Gifts at the Union Canal Elves Magicland, hosted by the Union Canal PTT.
The details for this event are listed below. This information, along with a budget envelope, was sent home with all students. The office does have copies or extras. Please have your child pick one up if you would like, however it is not necessary to have the envelope attached to shop.
List up to 10 people your child is to buy gifts for and the amount they may spend per person/pet. All gifts are priced $11 OR less. Examples of items for sale include keychains, magnets, jewelry, pens, ornaments, mugs/cups, décor, games, tools, toys, plush, and dog/cat toys.
Place cash or check in the envelope. Any unused amounts will be returned to your child in the envelope. If paying with check:
- MUST be made payable to Union Canal PTT, no exceptions.
- Write your child’s name on the NOTE line.
Send completed shopping envelopes to school on December 8th or 9th with your child! Homeroom teachers may only register their class to shop for one 20-minute time slot. Fifth graders might have a second opportunity to shop in the last hour on Friday – per teacher discretion.
Please know that children are not required to shop at Elves Magicland. They may simply browse and enjoy a treat!
Please note important details about the holiday shop:
- The Union Canal PTT utilizes an outside vendor to manage our gift inventory. If we run out of a certain item, this item may be available for an IOU purchase. If your child wants this item and is willing to wait for it to be shipped to Union Canal we may be able to issue a IOU for the purchase. The item will be ordered and your child will receive the item (pending shipping delays) prior to the Christmas Break.
- Teachers have pre-selected shopping times for their classroom. Each homeroom will have a 20 minute period to shop. Students may only shop and purchase items during their selected shopping time.
- Union Canal and the UCPTT will not be allowing students to 'hold' items for a later purchase. Students must have money to purchase items or they will not be allowed to shop. Items will not be held for purchase until money can be brought in to school. Union Canal or the UCPTT will also not be giving money to students to shop if they do not have any. Unfortunately, any student without money will not be able to purchase or bring any item home. If you would like your children to shop please be prepared and have them bring their shopping money to school.
- The notice, shopping flyer, and envelope attached were sent home with students.
