What is Happening in the Classroom?
Traditional:
- Science: Students have their unit 2 exam on the genetics unit coming up Tuesday, January 8, 2019. We will then move into the forces and motion unit. Students will learn about Newton’s 3 laws of motion, the effects of friction and gravity. Students will also be able to construct graphs of an object showing that objects motion as well as understand distance vs. time graphs.
- Social Studies: Welcome Back! We are starting a new unit this month on imperialism and the rise of empires around the world. Students will be looking at the impacts of the British, Spanish, French and Portuguese Empires on the world. We will discuss the positive and negative impacts that these nations had on Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
- Language Arts In traditional ELA class, we are working on organizing our essays for the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. This is an argumentative essay where students will attempt to prove that the main character, Salva, used persistence to survive the second Sudanese Civil War. Students have been gathering evidence on various challenges Salva endured in each chapter of the book since September, and I am very excited to see how they use that evidence to prove their thesis correct. The essay is due on Wednesday, 1/16/2019.
- Math: Over the next couple of weeks, students will be exploring probability. We will conduct various experiments to find the probability and explore simulations. Students will also learn the difference between Theoretical Probability and Experimental Probability. This unit will be fun and engaging!
Year-Round:
- Science: We will then move into the forces and motion unit. Students will learn about Newton’s 3 laws of motion, the effects of friction and gravity. Students will also be able to construct graphs of an object showing that objects motion as well as understand distance vs. time graphs.
- Social Studies: In social studies will begin our unit on Industrialization. We will study how the Industrial Revolution change the quality of life for the rich and poor, the impact it had on culture and society, and the role it played in capitalism and market competition. The Social Studies textbook is located on the Google Classroom in case your student needs to access the text at home.
- Language Arts: In ELA we will read the historical fiction novel Lyddie to help us understand life in Lowell, Massachusetts during the Industrial Revolution.
- Math: Students will be working on their 2nd quarter benchmark to assist with identifying their strengths and weakness in math.

How to Help at Home
Parents there are many ways that you can assist your child in school to ensure their success in 7th grade and beyond.
- Rather than asking a student how their day was, you could ask them something more specific that cannot be answered with a "yes" or "no". For example: What was the most interesting thing you learned today? or What was the coolest part of your day? Doing this can spark conversations with students and allow them to share details about their day at school.
- Some students complete homework when there is an incentive at home for work completion. An example of this could be not letting your child have their technology or TV time until they complete their homework and chores for the night. This allows them to have something to look forward to rather than dread at the end of the night.
