Grades and New Trimester

Our new trimester begins this Tuesday. Grades start fresh. Teachers are working to finalize grades from Trimester 1. We will run report cards on Tuesday afternoon and will determine who is eligible for the Honor Roll Breakfast. Students who qualify for the Honor Roll Breakfast (a 3.75 and higher) will receive an invitation during 7th period on Wednesday to bring home. In order to plan how much food to order we need to know how many people will be attending by Tuesday, November 20. The invitation will explain different ways to get that response to us.

Parent Technology Class

Our second Parent Tech Class is this Wednesday, November 14, from 8:30-9:30 am in Room 531. We hope you can join us!

ELD Potluck

Newcomer and ELD students and families are encouraged to join us for a potluck this Thursday, November 15, from 6:00-7:00 pm in the library. Bring a dish to share, get to know other families, and learn some tips to help your students at home so that they become more English proficient.

Electives & Clubs Showcase Night

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, November 15, 2018 for our first ever Electives & Club Showcase Night. Originally it was from 7:00-8:30 pm, but due to the growing excitement we will extend it until 9:00 pm. This will also provide more time for those of you attending the Grand Canyon Informational Night, which should end around 7:15 pm. Please see the attached flyer below for more details about what will be featured during this evening. The drama and music shows will each repeat three different times to make sure you get to see everything. Feel free to invite perspective Kennedy families to attend. We will also send flyers to our feeder schools this week.

Our students took the STAR reading test again this past week. I got on the announcements every morning to stress the importance of trying their best and updating them on how we were performing as a whole, walked around the school high fiving, bouncing up and down trying to get students excited and amped up, looking like an absolute goofball, and I checked in with students to see if they had taken the test yet and how they did. We also added some incentives to encourage students to do their best and take their time, as well as some supports to help with concentration and stress relief. It worked! Almost every class average went up and a majority of the students increased their scores! We are so proud of our Kennedy students!

Thank you to our teachers who also supported this effort and administered this test, and to the following people who helped with administering the test and tracking student progress: Elizabeth Calderon Garcia (Family Center Coordinator), Beth Bonfiglio (Assistant Principal), Weston Van Buskirk Barter (AmeriCorp Fellow), Sarah Cullum (District Language Arts Staff Development Teacher), and Chris Castro (former RCSD teacher and current Kennedy parent). This was a huge undertaking this past week, as we experimented with new strategies to help and encourage students.

This week we will enter scores as a non-weighted grade in PowerSchool again, so you can see your student’s score. November STAR scores can also be found on the report card next week. We did not have our beginning Newcomers take the test since they are just learning English and some students were absent and did not take the test. Below is the chart to see what grade level your student is reading at based on the scaled score. Use the middle column. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. As always, please encourage your child to read at home each day (including during Thanksgiving and Winter Break) and talk to them about what they are reading.

Big picture

There are two construction projects that we expect to start within the next couple of weeks. The first is a safe routes project in conjunction with Redwood City to improve the safety of the streets around Kennedy. Here are the locations of the projects:

• Area #1-Alameda de las Pulgas at Goodwin Avenue to the east and Goodwin Avenue/Maddox Drive to the west. Street improvements.

• Area #2-Connecticut Drive at Oregon Avenue, as well as Connecticut Drive at Washington Avenue. Street improvements.

• Area #3-Washington Avenue. from Connecticut Drive to Maddox Avenue. Street improvements and storm water containment.

The other project is Phase 1 of the Kennedy Bond construction. In Phase 1 a new main office will be constructed at the front of the school and will attach to the Family Center. As of right now, because the two front parking lots will be affected, drop off and pick up will be take place on Connecticut. The Family Center will also have to relocate temporarily.

Both projects’ timelines keep changing, so as I have more details I will communicate them to you.

Holiday Travel

It is almost the start of the holiday season. We recognize the importance of seeing family and friends, and how expensive plane tickets can be, which often influences when you travel, but we want to stress how critical it is for each student to be in school. A homework packet for those out five days or more (that we must have two weeks or more notice to put together), doesn’t make up for the in-person instruction and collaboration with peers. Please have your students in school right up until winter break and when we return back in January.

Google Classroom

We have created a Google Classroom as an easier way to post presentations (Principal’s Coffee, Parent Tech Class, etc.), resources, videos, and more. Instructions are below to join our Google Classroom. We will start updating it more and more in English and Spanish. To join, you need a free Google account (email address). If you need help in setting one up we can help you. Contact Kathryn Marinos, our Tech Coach, at or pop into the Family Center.
