McKay High School Weekly Newsletter

Week of Feb 21 -- 24

Message from the Admin Team

"We are what we repeatedly do," this quote speaks to the importance of creating good habits. As we enter the 3rd week of this semester this would be a good time to check on your student's habits. How often are they tardy? Are they absent to several classes per week? We often hear from parents whose student's are reporting that their teachers are not taking accurate attendance. We would like to assure you that out staff members are making every attempt to make sure that attendance is accurately reported, a mistake is likely once or twice. If your student is reporting a mistake every week, we would like for you to know that this is unlikely. If you would like to work with the school to help your student with their attendance please reach out to our Assistant Principal who oversees attendance issues. Email him mercado_antonio@salkeiz.k12.or.us

Together we can assure that your student leaves McKay High School with a solid set of positive habits.

Take care

Shout Outs (Academic, Athletics, Activities)

The Royal Scots continue to stack their victories. This past week was another successful week for our East Salem Community. Take a moment to appreciate these pictures as well as read a little about these winners.

  • Friday, February 21 we hosted our annual talent show. Scots have talent! Winners include: Allie Xiong and Sam Riberas, Wilan’dre Bell-Sims, Santos García, and Lisa Fernández. Thanks to everyone who attended, our emcees and judges, tech crew, as well as Chris Torres and Tiffany Carstensen for organizing our talent show.
  • This past Friday and Saturday the McKay High School Wrestling team competed at the Mid Willamette Conference championship. Several of our wrestlers placed in the top six, with 3 qualifying for the State Championship. This upcoming weekend the following wrestlers will be traveling to Portland to compete at the Memorial Coliseum. Heavyweight Michael Menzie finished 3rd, Garrett Flores finished 4th, and finally our sole champion Ismael Flores @ 120 lbs. The entire wrestling team is a great example of the strength and resilience that exists within our school community.
  • We are very excited and proud to let you all know that Piper Martin won 1st place in the Novice Informative category in a recent competition (Reynolds Invitational in Troutdale)! This is only her second tournament, and this is a huge personal accomplishment for her and obviously a very meaningful accomplishment for our small newly reconstituted team.Seth Matheny also participated and took on Impromptu Speaking in addition to trying his informative speech for the second time. We are very proud of both of them!

  • This Friday the Boys Basketball team honored their six seniors who played their final home game at McKay High School, Diego Ramos, Dameon Ramirez, Christian Lua, Daniel Briones, Brandon Tran, and Elijah Johnson all have represented for the Royal Scots!
