UND NSPA Monthly Communiqué
December 2021, Issue 15
So Grateful!
I really enjoy Thanksgiving, but not only because of the great food, a day to sleep in, and the chance to decorate my house for the holidays. The break comes at just the right time in the fall semester for me to take a step back and reflect after the rush of finalizing scholarship applications and getting the first good, and disappointing, news about the results.
I tell my students who apply for national scholarships to focus on the joys of competing as the end will take care of itself. I should follow my own advice. At times I become distracted by the shiny prize at the end. This lovely holiday break reminds me to pause and to be grateful.
I am grateful for the students I serve. They are just wonderful people and standout students. Through amazing time management, organizational skills, and grit, as a group they applied for the American Dream, Brooke Owens, CBYX, CLS, Fulbright, Gilman, PD Soros, Rangel, Rhodes, and DoD Smart scholarships this semester. (This is the first year I assisted students with the Brooke Owens, CBYX, and PD Soros. I am so glad they were patient with me.)
Sometimes they do win. My NPSA students and I just hosted our annual scholarship ceremony recognizing the achievements of students who won scholarships last year. Thank you to all my NSPA students who helped plan that event, which we started in early September.
I am particularly grateful, however, for those students who showed high levels of commitment, but who did not ultimately receive an award for their efforts. I marvel at their efforts in the pursuit of opportunities without guarantees. I truly believe that entering competition yields rewards to all the competitors, not just those who win.
The end of the holiday brings us back to the reality that the scholarship clock never stops. I have listed many more scholarships that will be due over the break and in the spring. While the competitions continue, let us take just a second to pause and be grateful for the chance to dare greatly.
Have a fantastic break and I will reach out to you in Spring 2022.

Killam Fellowship
The Killam Fellowships Program provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in Canada and the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in the other country. Students may participate in the program via the Open Competition modality - applying for and registering at the host university and paying host tuition fees. We recommend that students consider applying to a Canadian institution for which tuition waiver agreements are in place through their home institution. Deadline: January 31st, 2022
- Application instructions – You will apply to the Open Competition modality, the Direct Exchange instructions only apply to students from Killam partner universities.
Conditions--Students need to select courses that will receive credits at their home institution. Students that take up the Killam Fellowship in the last year of their undergraduate studies must complete their last semester at their home university. The Killam Fellowships Program offers a cash award of $10,000 US for a full academic year (pro-rated at $5,000 US for one semester), along with an allowance to offset the cost of health insurance in the currency of the host country.ConThe Foundation hosts all new Killam Fellows at an Orientation program in Ottawa each fall and again at a seminar in Washington D.C. each spring (should public health guidelines allow it). In addition, all Fellows are eligible to apply for a mobility grant in an amount not to exceed $800.
