A Message from the Administration

The First Month at Allen Brook

by John Terko - Principal

We are off to a great start to the school year here at Allen Brook School. Teachers are finishing up assessments as well as completing the first six weeks of school with Responsive Classroom.

Responsive Classroom is built around six central components that provide a social curriculum around our academic curriculum. The six components are as follows:

  1. Classroom organization that provides active interest areas for students
  2. Morning meeting format that provides children daily opportunities to practice greetings, conversation and sharing.
  3. Rules and Consequences- review our PBIS rules over the 6 week period.
  4. Academic choice so students take control of their own learning.
  5. Guided discovery of learning materials, areas of the room and curriculum content.
  6. Assessment and reporting to parents through parent conferences and weekly notification.

All six are taught over the first six weeks and beyond to build a strong social and academic curriculum for all students to become successful learners.

In an effort to promote student socialization among the teams, we changed our lunch/recess format for this school year. We separated the grades out of each team so that all first graders have lunch and recess together, while all second graders eat and enjoy recess together. So far this has been running smoothly. This helps to create a whole school approach as we intermingle between the teams.

We will be celebrating our Harvest Festival on Thursday, October 26 from 11:15 to 1 pm. We could really use parent volunteers to help serve with your child’s grade. Weather permitting we will be in the courtyard.

Reminder: School starts at ABS at 8:00am. If you arrive after 8:10 then your child is considered “tardy”. We send out letters to parents when your child has been tardy or absent a certain number of days. Every time your child is late they are missing important activities in the classroom.

Please make every effort to have your child at ABS by 8:00am.

Developmental Screening for Children ages 3-5 years

Do you have concerns about your child’s development? Allen Brook School is offering a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 years. A screening can be used to determine if children are learning basic skills and meeting developmental milestones. Early childhood professionals will engage in activities which will allow them to observe the way your child plays, learns, speaks, and moves their body. Each child is unique and develops at his or her own pace, but sometimes concerns can arise, and it is helpful to identify these concerns as early as possible to in order to get necessary supports in place.

Friday, October 27th from 9:00 - 11:00. Pre-registration is required.

Please call Victoria Francis, Early Childhood Outreach Educator,

at 871-6240 to schedule an appointment.

(* If you have concerns about a younger child and would like to request a screening, please call us.)
