The Fairview Connection

DECEMBER 17, 2021

Dear Fairview Families,

We’ve had a great week here at Fairview! Thank you to all families that attended our Fairview Winter Singalong on Tuesday evening. The weather was delightful, the mood was festive and fun, and our chorus performances sounded great! Special thanks to Christine Happ, Fairview’s music teacher, for her efforts in coordinating the event, the Fairview PTO for adding to the festivities by selling glow sticks, donuts and hot chocolate, and Alex Kanaris for donating his time, talent and equipment to provide sound and lighting to make it all come together. I hope you enjoyed taking some time out of the busy week to be together with others from our school community as we get ready for winter break. I also want to thank all of the families who participated in the Fairview Giving Tree this year. The families in need who received these gifts were all so grateful for your kindness and generosity. We are truly fortunate to live in a community where people care about each other.

As we look forward to January, our free lunch program will continue, but the ordering will now be done a month at a time. The app we used during the month of December caused some logistical problems for us at school, so we are now using a monthly Google Form. Please complete THIS FORM to participate in the free lunch program for the month of January if you are interested. It is due by NOON on Wednesday, December 29th. Like we mentioned last week, many of our students have had the opportunity to have both of their COVID vaccinations. Once you’ve done this, we encourage you to send a photo or copy of your child’s vaccination card to Fairview nurse, Kelly Brunning, at You can also make a copy and drop it off in the front office if you prefer. The guidelines provided by local health authorities related to quarantining for close contacts change for students who are vaccinated, so it is helpful for us to have this information on file.

Our annual winter break will take place from Monday, December 20th through Friday, December 31st. I wish you all Happy Holidays and look forward to seeing our students back again on January 3, 2022!

Please send a copy of your child's COVID vaccination card to the health office after your child receives dose #2 of the COVID vaccine. This information is important to have on file as students who are fully vaccinated (2 weeks post 2nd dose) do not need to quarantine if identified as a close contact (per IDPH guidelines).

Students should arrive at school in the morning wearing a mask. Also, please remember to put a bag with some extra masks in your student(s) backpack in case they need another one during the school day.

Also, anyone entering our building must be wearing a mask.

If a Fairview staff member, directing traffic in the drop-off zone is not outside, it is necessary for you to come to the front of the school to drop off your student(s). The drop-off zone supervisor comes back into the building shortly after 8:45am when the first entry bell rings. We only have supervision in that area and our bus turnaround from 8:35am-8:45am. Students need to be in their classrooms at 8:50am which is when the school day starts.

PTO's program, Leapin' into Literature, returns this February! We are seeking volunteers to read wonderful new library books to their children's classrooms during lunch recess (11:50 a.m.-12:20 p.m. for Grades 4 & 5; 12:20-12:50 p.m. for Grades 2 & 3). Each classroom has the opportunity to participate in Leapin' into Literature once a week during February. If you are interested in reading to your child's class, please click on the frog and fill out the form.

Read-A-Way is a reading incentive program from the Fairview PTO partnership with Station 34 in Mount Prospect. Students have a chance to earn a free kids pizza every month by meeting their daily reading goals.

Click on the graphic for more information and December's reading log calendar.

Concurrent students can drop their completed calendars off at the school. We will contact you once your certificate is ready to be picked up for your free pizza.

The Fairview PTO has a wonderful history of giving students a book for their birthday. For the 2021-2022 school year, they are continuing that tradition. If your child is celebrating a birthday this month or has celebrated a birthday since the beginning of this school year, please have them go onto ClassLink on their chrome book and go to the Birthday Book link or click on the graphic to access the link. They must choose a book that is on the Google document listing all the grade level books. Students who are learning from home can pick their birthday book up from the school.

A lot of students who celebrated their birthdays in August, September, October, and November have not selected their birthday book yet. Make sure to go to ClassLink or click on the birthday cake to make your selection...don't forget to pick the tab for the appropriate grade level list.

As the weather turns cooler, please make sure your children are dressed to go out for recess. Unless it is raining or the temperature /wind chill is too cold (15 degrees or below, real-feel temperature) the students will go out every day for recess. Please write your student’s last name on a tag in their coat as we already have a lot of lost coats and sweatshirts in our Lost and Found.

All students will go out with their class unless we have a doctor’s note limiting their participation. If a student has been ill and he/she is not feeling well enough to participate in all the activities of the school day, perhaps another day at home will insure a healthy return to school.

Fairview's PTO supports our students and staff by offering fun family events along with sponsoring assemblies all during the year. Your support of the PTO gets you access to the on-line student directory, Directory Spot. Click the graphic for more information on how to support Fairview's PTO.

We appreciate everyone's flexibility this year as we implemented our free lunch food program. We continue to update our processes as we assist students in getting a free lunch. Unfortunately, the online application we started using in November had limitations that we did not expect. Therefore, we are moving back to an online survey for lunches in January. The good news is that parents will now receive a confirmation email after completing the form.

With the addition of a confirmation email, we will be having parents sign up for the next four weeks (January 3-28) at once. Please make sure to keep the confirmation email so that you know which days you signed up for lunches.

This lunch form is for Full-Day Elementary Students:

  • Please complete THIS FORM to participate in the free lunch program. This is a free and optional program. However, for your child to participate, families are required to complete the weekly lunch order form
  • The form is due by NOON on Wednesday, December 29, 2021.

We encourage all families to participate in this program.

If you have any questions or do not receive a confirmation email, please email me directly for support at

The office's procedure for those times when you need to sign your child in or out of school has changed. We maintain an electronic sign-in/sign-out sheet in the office so all you have to do is drop your student off (if arriving late) and we will sign them in and get them down to their class. If you need to sign your child out, ring the doorbell, tell us who you are picking up, and we will send your student out the front door.
