February 2018

Lots to Celebrate

February brings us Valentine's Day, Black History Month and even the tail end of Catholic School's Week. The Gateway Challenge is well underway! Classroom groups are in and out almost every hour of the day for amazing research and collaborative projects. Coach Bell and Mrs. Jarman have even been sharing the space this past week! Incredible veterans have been coming here almost daily for the past month to do interviews for the Veterans History Project through the Library of Congress. I decided to count today and there have been over 250 students through the door so far (and it is only 2:15 pm!). I love the chaos, the learning, the excitement, and everything about this place!

Veteran's History Project through Library of Congress

Thanks to the efforts made by Mr. Tom Emmel, Helias AP History students are getting the opportunity to interview our country's veterans. I have been fortunate to play a small part in this through hosting most of the interviews in the library and assisting with the videotaping. The project, through the American Folklife Center, is designed to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. What a gift for our students to be able to encounter individuals like the 90+-year-old WWII veteran who served at Normandy. Wow!
