Remote Learning - Carson Middle School
Sara Hayden-Tribute
Eagle Family,
It is with heavy heart that we share the news with you that one of our dedicated and beloved FFC8 colleague and friends, Sara Hayden, passed away from a courageous battle with cancer. Sara was an exceptional math teacher for the last five years at Carson Middle School and is remembered for her dedicated work as a teacher, coach, and mentor for staff and students. Many members of the CMS family were able to send her written messages of love and support visible outside her hospital room window before she passed with loved ones at her side. Sara is survived by her husband Brandon (teacher at CMS) and their two young children Will (6 years) and Finley (9 months).
As a staff, we have been emotionally pushed to the limit this year. Most everything that is happening does not make sense and hurts to the very soul. However, as we grieve for Sara and her family we are reminded of how she lived her life as shining example for all of us. She portrayed a sense of calm and confidence in every difficult task she took on. She used humor and advice to guide us to think of positive outcomes, and many times she would simply provide a friendly ear to listen. Most importantly, she often ended her conversations with a reference to being part of THE EAGLE FAMILY. We are a family more today than any other time this year thanks to Sara. She has made us realize how much we need to care and support each other. Sara will “Forever be an Eagle”.
To help celebrate Sara’s life, please use the Padlet to share your memories, photos, songs, or send a message to Sara and her family.

End of Year Updates
Thank you for your patience in my communication on end of year events. Unfortunately, per post regulations and the world we live in they are very limited. Our staff has not been able to access the school, only an emergency support staff is able to go into the building two times a week for four hour increments.
This has limited opportunities for teacher car parades, teacher messaging through signs, and many other opportunities that are sprouting up across the area and we are seeing on the news. I am very sad and frustrated that we cannot do more- believe me we want to see your children as much as they want to see their teachers and friends.
If and when, restrictions start to lift, I would like to be able do something safe within the community. Any ideas you have towards this (even if it is in the summer) I would be willing to help plan, design, and provide resources. We just want to see the students and let them know how much we care.
Sorry I have been out of the loop on this page, but many things have transpired that took my work a different direction.
Thanks for being wonderful.

Archive Announcement for 4/8/2020- Internet on Post
Several requests to teachers have been made to have hard copies available for family pick up. This is not possible under the strict guidelines we all are subject to per government, Fort Carson, and national requests. Logistically, based on Governor Polis' workplace requirements (essential staff and operations only), stay at home orders, and prohibiting groups to gather the hard copy requests are not available as an option if you have internet/WiFi capabilities. It is my hope that after April 30th this will be remedied by lessening of restrictions. However, we will have to wait and see what transpires.
My solution. Please review the grade level expectations listed below. In particular, teachers understand that you may have different times of the day your student can have access to the computer and WiFi in your home. Therefore, teachers are not requiring students to be in class during that exact time. It is preferred if possible, but understood if not possible. Teachers will also be flexible towards turn in dates and student work completion. The bottom line is many things are out of our control (internet speed), but the things we have in control (work turn in, grading, feedback) will be adaptive and flexible.
I will continue to proactively think of solutions to aid in the "slow" internet situation our students are experiencing and share my plans once I can identify a proactive solution.
Thank you for your support.

Archive- IMPORTANT MESSAGE 4/3/2020
Please listen to Mr. Greco on the link below as he shares his thoughts on the start of Remote Learning at Carson Middle School.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Archive- Personal Message
I know many of you are wondering what this means for education and have many questions pertaining to your child's future. Here is what I can guarantee:
- Your child had three quality semesters of learning skills towards the next grade level, this has been a very successful year of learning and will be applicable to the next grade level.
- Teachers have worked relentlessly on making meaningful online lessons that will focus on essential 4th quarter skills, and review "learned" skills from previous semesters.
- This online experience cannot be detrimental to your child's grades. Meaning they cannot do worse than where they left off 3rd quarter when this event began. They can only improve. As details emerge on how this grading process works, I will share the info via this newsletter.
- The lessons teachers have designed are engaging, interactive and will allow flexibility to complete and accessibility for help. PLEASE LET YOUR STUDENT KNOW THAT WE ARE HERE TO HELP AND WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO ASSIST THEM AND YOU THROUGH THIS PROCESS. If they stumble, have issues, cannot figure out the technology side, or just are struggling with this process they will not be penalized.
- The first week will be a learning curve and many things will work well, and some will not. After the first week we will have a better understanding of the process and will adapt each week to make it better. Use the resources listed on this newsletter for district technology help. Teachers, nor myself, can fix your technology issues from our home, please use the proper channels (see district technology link at the bottom of the page).
I have been so impressed with our staff. I have never seen anything like this before in my entire educational career. They have supported each other, helped with issues, and have stepped up as leaders- despite their own anxiety and family needs. They want to be with the CMS students, they miss them immensely- and it has been really hard for them as their passion for your children is immeasurable. I have heard it in their voices and read it in their emails. If you get a chance send them a note of appreciation- they have gone above and beyond to build this online learning plane as we are flying it! Therefore, I am going to ask you when we start this process next week to respect the hours they provide for help during the day. Evenings are off limits for them, they need to process this event as much as every person does right now. Simply, they need to be with their families and not answering questions after hours.
I also want to thank all of you for the support you have shown me during this time. I have had countless emails of support and understanding. I am truly blessed to work for the Carson family and will continue to do everything in my power to support this amazing community.
Stay safe, be kind, take advantage of the time with your family- Miss all of you very much.
