A Message from our Principal...
Dear Jefferson Families,
Happy Spring Break, everyone! This mild weather is very welcome and it’s so nice to enjoy being outside again. I’m hoping that everyone can bask in the sunshine over the spring break next week and enjoy time outdoors. Speaking of enjoyment, we have been thrilled that more than 70% of our students are back in the building with us. Our cohorts have helped us figure out the best ways to manage social distancing while at school. We are ready for April 6th when all who want to can be in person all five days. Instruction times continue to be 8-12:30 and 2:00-3:00 except for Wednesdays, when there will be no 2:00 session.
You may recall that due to the pandemic, the 2020 annual testing was suspended. Recently, the U.S Department of Education informed all 50 states that students are required to take state tests and further, that students must take the tests in person. Additionally, we are required to administer each of the annual summative assessments. Before you yawn and stop reading, I’d like to provide a little more information about this testing season. The chart below lists the required tests and the students who need to take them below. Unfortunately, to get these in before the end of the school year, it may seem as though we’re testing all the time. I’m sorry about that! We are mindful and will only administer one test per day during the testing window. Teachers will keep students and you up-to-date about each test. We want our students and families to know that standardized tests are just one snapshot of where the student is today in his or her learning journey. We don’t want students to be anxious or worried, but to think of these tests as a normal part of their school day.
Remote students would have to come to Jefferson in order to complete these assessments. We will provide separate locations in the building for any remote students who do come so that we adhere to social distancing guidelines. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher or me if you have any questions at all.
Most Sincerely,
Dr. Judy Floeter

Attendance
We are extremely excited to be back in the building Monday through Friday upon our return from Spring Break on April 6th!
Remember:
- Our school day is shorter than normal so that means missing one session will result in an absence.
- It is important to make every effort to have students in attendance every day whether you have chosen to remain remote or to return to in person learning.
- Attendance will also be taken during the remote time for all students between 2-3pm.
We work hard to closely monitor attendance as it has a direct effect on student performance. We know that together we can make this work so let's finish this year out strong! Please contact us if there is any way that we can help make this transition a smooth one.
4th Grade News
Spring is officially here! We hope everyone has a relaxing spring break and will come back ready to finish the school year strong!
In reading, we are focusing on text structures. The goal is for every student to be able to identify the text structures of different texts. These are some of the text types students are identifying: problem and solution, description, sequence, cause and effect, and compare and contrast. To help reinforce reading skills at home, please continue to have your child read for twenty minutes every night.
In math, students will be studying and learning various strategies for division. We will be solving simple division facts as well as multi digit division. It is important that students know their multiplication facts to ensure success with division.
In social studies, students are exploring a new region of the United States. The study of regions is helping all students gain familiarity with the states. Students read about important cities and historical monuments.
In science, students are currently working with energy. They are discovering different sources and types of energy. These skills will continue to be reinforced in upcoming STEM lessons.
After spring break, students will be completing the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) and NWEA testing in both math and reading. It is important for students to get plenty of rest to do their best.
5th Grade News
In ELA and SLA we will be using novels to hit all our reading standards for the quarter. A special thanks to the Jonathon Moore Foundation for help in purchasing our new books.
We will be finishing up decimals and moving into volume for math. Find ways to talk about volume at home and how you use it in real life.
In social studies we will be learning about the events that led up to The Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War. Science will be finishing up the human footprint and moving into matter cycles and energy transfers in ecosystems.
Keep reading every day!
