Readers' and Writers' Workshop

In Readers' Workshop, we will celebrate our second unit of study. The children will get to read with partners and show demonstrate strategies to solve challenging words and continue to read with fluency and prosody. Our next unit of study will focus on comprehension strategies. The students will also be practicing their presentation for Special Person's Day. Reading skills taught this week will be cause and effect and sequencing. We will complete a book study on "The Great Turkey Race" and practice sorting, sequencing, and creative writing with this holiday book.

In Writers' Workshop, they celebrated their "Small Moments" stories with several partners. The children had wonderful ideas, and they really enjoy reading their stories with other students. Our next unit of study focuses on writing realistic fiction stories. I will be reading several stories and demonstrating this writing genre.

Language Arts will focus on proper punctuation at the end of a sentence and review of synonyms and antonyms. The phonics skill this week is the -ack word family, along with s blends, /sh/, /sn/, /sp/ and /st/. Sight words are: see, old, and who.

Math and Social Studies

In math, I am introducing the students to fact families. We will practice with manipulatives to show how addition and subtraction are related. In conjunction with this skill, I will introduce fact families (the 2 addition and 2 subtraction number sentences that belong to a fact family of 3 numbers). We will also practice skip counting by 2s , place value to 50, and begin observing coins to master identifying and naming the value of a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. For Social Studies, we will be working on seasonal decorations, creative writing, and  a Thanksgving lapbook to share at Special Person's Day.  We will be reading lots of literature - non-fiction and fiction - that is related to the Thanksgiving holidays!
