Rockbrook Reminder - FALL BREAK

Rockbrook's Weekly Updates - 10-16-2020

Happy Fall Break!

Thank you families for your efforts to navigate our variable schedule in these unusual times. Below is an image to help clarify the coming week, when students will be having typical instruction, and when they will have time off. Thanks for your understanding. (Click the image below to view a 2nd quarter calendar.). We are looking forward to having students back in a 5-day per week instruction mode.
We want to thank the Rockbrook Community Club and our Rockbrook Families for providing a delicious meal for our teachers during our Parent-Teacher Communication Day. If for any reason you did not make contact with your child's teacher or yet have further questions, please email them or call next week so we can continue to work together for your child's success.

Halloween Celebrations

Our Halloween Celebrations this year will look different in order to meet the guidelines of our district and building safety plans. During our October Community Club Meeting, we shared the requests and rationales for how we will safely manage these times and try to still provide students some fun.
  • October 30th will be a school-wide Pajama Day. Students are asked not to bring costumes this year. Changing and wearing costumes, masks, etc. while maintaining distance and safety masks poses too many potential risks.
  • Students will receive a special Halloween treat with their lunch, as managing all students eating during celebrations in the classroom would not meet with our safety practices.
  • Classrooms will watch a fun Halloween themed movie/video during the celebration time and teachers will be provided a game that students can play.

Please Help Ensure Your Child's Mask Fits Well

As we finish up our 1st quarter wearing face masks throughout our day, some student's masks are beginning to get stretched out. Washing masks regularly and replacing elastic when needed is helpful to ensure that student's masks fit properly and stay snuggly over their nose and mouth throughout the day. If, during the day we determine that your child's mask is not fitting properly we will offer them one of our spares but appreciate your help to check that their masks are all fitting well so as to be both safe and comfortable.

Providing opportunities for students with and without disabilities to be together and develop friendships and develop skills. (Click here or below for further details).

Virtual STEAM Night

In the past, we have partnered with Oakdale to host STEAM Nights each quarter. We have also offered a variety of after-school STEAM clubs. Due to the pandemic, we are trying something new this year! We are providing a virtual STEAM experience for each student thanks to the support of Westside Community Schools and Prairie STEM. On October 23, your child(ren) will come home with their own STEAM kit. The kit includes a link to a YouTube video to watch to build background knowledge, directions for a STEAM activity, and most, if not all of the supplies your child(ren) need to complete the activity. When the activity is completed, your child(ren) can record their learning on Flipgrid to be entered into a chance to win a prize! Simply scan the QR code on the box. Submissions need to be completed by Oct. 30. Any questions can be emailed to Mr. Carlson ( We look forward to this exciting, new experience!

Extended Campus Students are welcome to stop by during normal school hours next week to pick up their STEAM Kit, we are happy to bring it out to your vehicle if you call ahead (402.390.6475)

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month

For the last couple years our school has featured World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st. We plan to continue to do so, providing opportunities for students to learn how to support their friends with different abilities. While programs like our Unified Circle of Friends program promotes inclusion, friendship, and the opportunity to appreciate our different abilities, we also wanted to offer all families the chance to learn more about Down Syndrome during this month when we seek to raise awareness.

Click the picture to the right to view a great kid-friendly resource to help kids understand more about Down Syndrome.

Locally, there are several organizations that provide leadership and education about Down Syndrome as well as other diverse abilities. We encourage families to explore these links and learn more. Talk with your child about how they can actively be a part of including and being a good friend to their peers. We'll be providing more information soon about opportunities for students to be actively involved in activities to promote fun, friendship, and inclusion!

PBIS Parent Team Member Needed

PBIS - Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (or Positive Behavior In School as we use with students) is our school-wide behavioral support system at Rockbrook. It involves teaching expectations, reinforcing positive choices, and having consistent response to problem behaviors. To help coordinate these efforts we have a team consisting of several teachers and parents from our school. We are currently looking for an additional parent interested in working with our team. A parent's perspective is extremely valuable to understand how our efforts are working to make Rockbrook the best place for kids and families.

If you would be interested, please let Mr. Higginbotham know ( We typically meet after school on the last Tuesday of the month for about 45 minutes to an hour.
