Oceanside High School Weekly Update

The Pirate Way
Hello Pirates!
Welcome to December! I can't believe how fast this first semester went. We only have 10 school days left until the end of the semester. Please make sure that you are finishing strong. We still have quite a few events on campus to bring us to the end of the semester including our winter sports, ASB door decorating contest and food drive, a sock drive, OHS Cheerleading toy drive, and also twin sheet drive in the counseling office. I am so proud of the many ways OHS is giving back to our community!
This year we have been busy behind the scenes making sure that we are continually investigating and improving our practices here at OHS. We want to make sure that the Pirate Experience is not only creating the best possible learning environment to ensure academic success for ALL of our Pirates, but also that we are providing an experience that builds on our Pirate Traditions and Core Values. As we continually look at our best practices at OHS the number one question we ask is: Is it good for students? If we do not get a yes on that question we will work to make sure that our practices change. We look forward to finishing this semester strong, but we are always looking toward the future and continually making OHS the best it can be!
Make sure to mark these important dates on your calendars.

If you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to reach out to any OHS staff member! We are a team working toward a common goal. Only when we all work together can we truly transform and increase the success of all of our OHS students!
Pirates you are a part of something big! You belong and will always belong in the Oceanside High School Pirate Community. What an amazing feeling to realize you belong to something bigger than the individual Pirate, but rather part of a 100 year plus Pirate Ship Community!
Regardless of where you may go and no matter what you end up accomplishing the one thing that you have to count on is that you will ALWAYS be a PIRATE!
Stay safe! Know you are loved and belong to the Pirate community - this is the Pirate Way!

Congratulations to our OHS Forestry Challenge Teams
OHS EARNED 2nd PLACE & 3rd PLACE at their FIRST COMPETITION
The competition included a knowledge & skills challenge and a group presentation. The skills competition made up 60% of their grade and the presentation was 40% of their grade. The knowledge and skills challenge tested the teams' knowledge of various forestry related information including several skills that foresters do. This includes measuring tree height, diameter, canopy density and age. As well as identifying tree species, and calculating how much lumber could be harvested from a section of a forest. The presentation required the students to prepare a forestry management plan for the new owners of the property we were visiting and to then share the plan with foresters, business owners and local residents. The information for this management plan came from data that students collected. The students used the forestry skills they learned to collect data on a 1/10th acre site that was assigned to their group. The data from all 13 teams was then shared with each individual team which was given 6 hours in total to prepare their management plan and presentation.
