Wrestling
On Thursday, Hobart celebrated SENIOR NIGHT prior to hosting Munster in the final NCC dual meet of the 2019-2020 season. Our boys entered UNDEFEATED in conference action at 4-0 and the goal was to stay that way. Well ... not only did the Brickies stay UNDEFEATED in the NCC, but they were also UNDEFEATED for the ENTIRE MATCH! Hobart won by a STAGGERING score of 81-0 over the outmatched Mustangs!! This marked the 2nd time this season that our boys posted a shut out - back in December they DOMINATED Andrean 80-0. In fact, for the season, Hobart outscored conference opponents 344-31 and went 5-0!! Like I said ... AWESOME!!
THANK YOU to our seniors - Hayden Homoky, Chad McLean, Mark Mummey, Nathan Schammert & Lance Skog - for all your hard WORK WORK WORK over the course of your careers in PURPLE & GOLD and for representing H-town so well!!
At Saturday's Northwest Crossroads Conference CHAMPIONSHIP meet, Hobart fans could hear Queen's WEEEEEE ARE THE CHAMPIONS ... MY FRIENDS playing on "repeat" as our boys celebrated 7 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS, 5 Runners-Up, a 3rd and a 4th place finish in the 14 weight classes leading to our 6th CONSECUTIVE NCC CHAMPIONSHIP!! Hobart finished the day with 288 team points ... 2nd place KV tallied 206.5 followed by Lowell with 199 in 3rd. Saturday was really more of a CORONATION than a competition and without a doubt a GREAT DAY TO BE A BRICKIE!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH COOK, HIS ENTIRE STAFF AND ALL OF OUR BOYS ON ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP! YOU MAKE US VERY PROUD!!
Here are the weight class results from Saturday:

Girls
The Lady Brickies were ROAD WARRIORS this past week with a trip to area #3-ranked Chesterton on Tuesday and a trek down I-65 on Friday to face the Lowell Red Devils.
On Tuesday, our girls faced a tough test against the Lady Trojans. Entering the game with a record of 13-3, Chesterton was no doubt one of the best teams Hobart has faced all year. The Lady Brickies came out of the gate with something to prove, PLAYED TOUGH on both ends and hung in there through 16 minutes of play ... entering the half trailing just 25-15! The Lady Trojans exited their locker room with a renewed sense of urgency and took control in the 3rd quarter, ultimately sending Hobart home disappointed with a 62-27 loss after outscoring our girls 37-12 after the break.
Friday night, the weather outside was frightful ... but "The Pit" down at Lowell was HOT as our Lady Brickies squared off with the Red Devils in NCC play! This one was a BATTLE! Tied at 6 after 8 minutes, Lowell seemingly took control in the 2nd quarter and led 23-11 before Hobart rallied to score the final 5 points of the half on a senior Grace Nestich lay-up and a late 3 by classmate Kora Neace to close the gap to 23-16! Neace's 3 was assisted by Nestich after a SPECTACULAR move where she dribbled the ball through the defender's legs ... crazy! To open the 3rd, Lowell again stretched their lead to double figures at 32-18 only to see the Lady Brickies rally AGAIN to cut the deficit to 36-30 entering the 4th! Nestich BURIED a 3 to start the final frame and play was FRANTIC from that point on!! Junior Lexi Williams tied it at 37 ... Lowell went back up 43-38 ... Williams scored again to cut it to 3 ... Lowell went up 5 with less than 2 minutes ... Nestich scored a TOUGH basket in traffic to cut it to 3 AGAIN with just over a minute to play ... and just when you thought our girls might be able to pull off the upset, the Red Devils made JUST ENOUGH FTs in the closing moments to hold off the Lady Brickies 52-46. Our girls played with SO MUCH BRICKIE PRIDE ... it was a tough loss, but one where we should hold our heads high after giving such a TREMENDOUS EFFORT. Grace Nestich scored 14 points to lead Hobart ... Lexi Williams added 12 in the loss.
The Lady Brickies are 8-11 on the season with 4 games remaining. After a trip to Merrillville on Tuesday, our girls will be at home the rest of the way until sectional play begins over at Portage in a little more than 2 weeks.

Boys
The lone game on the schedule this week for our boys cagers was a trip to area #1 and AP #15-ranked Chesterton. The defending Class 4A Sectional 2 Champion Trojans ... led by Grace College commit Jake Wadding ... are big, talented and experienced. Chesterton got the upper hand early by jumping out to a 20-8 1st quarter lead. More of the same followed in the 2nd quarter as the Trojans extended the lead to 37-15 and went into halftime with a 22-point cushion. The Brickies BATTLED HARD the entire game, but unfortunately the host Trojans were just too much to handle and sent our boys home with a tough 78-37 defeat.
Our boys are nearing the halfway point of the season and currently hold a 5-5 record. Hammond Clark (Wednesday) and Munster (Saturday) will visit the friendly confines this week to test the Brickies. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! LET'S GO!!

Gymnastics
Talk about a tough opener. Hobart went up against defending state champion Chesterton on Tuesday and the hard WORK WORK WORK our girls have been putting in at practice over the last 2 months SHINED BRIGHT! The Lady Brickies totaled 97.875 as a team and garnered some hard-earned places in individual events and the all-around competition! Freshman Haylie Skripac placed 6th on bars and 4th all-around with 33.5 points. Classmate Daeges Morgan placed 6th on beam ... sophomore Aisha Arias finished 5th all-around at 32.025 and senior Neely Harpp was 6th with a 31.2.
On Thursday, Merrillville and Lowell were the opponents as Hobart traveled into the Pirate's Cove for another competition. Showing consistency right out of the gate, the Lady Brickies again surpassed the 97 point total as a team by posting a 97.05! Freshman Haylie Skripac again led the charge with 1st place finishes on the vault and bars on her way to 2nd place all-around with a 34.05! Sophomore Aisha Arias won on the floor and placed 5th on beam, 6th on vault and bars, and came away 4th in the all-around at 31.85! Senior Neely Harpp took 2nd on the vault and freshman Daeges Morgan got 4th on beam and 5th on the vault to round out Hobart's podium placers.
On the JV side of things, sophomore Abrianna Piontek placed 1st on both vault and beam, junior Nataly Ponce was 3rd on both vault and beam, and sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez was 4th on the floor and 5th on vault!
This was a GREAT start to the competition season for our gymnasts! This upcoming Saturday they will travel all the way to Fort Wayne to represent the "219" at the Concordia Lutheran High School Inviational! GOOD LUCK LADIES!!

Girls
Tuesday, the destination was NCC-leader Munster and without a doubt the toughest competition Hobart has faced this season. In a CLOSE meet throughout, the Lady Brickies fell to the Lady Mustangs 104-82 for their 1st NCC loss of the season. Despite the final score, Hobart swam really well and kept a few streaks alive as junior phenom Emma Wright stayed UNDEFEATED on the season with wins in both the 50 Free and 100 Back races, and the 200 Free Relay team of senior Becky Lozano, juniors Ana Tepavcevich and Delaney O'Brien ... along with Wright ... also won to remain UNDEFEATED on the season!! Also earning event victories for Hobart were the 200 Medley Relay team (same as the 200 Free group), Lozano in the 100 Fly and Tepavcevich in the 100 Breast!
On Thursday, the Lady Brickies traveled west on 73rd over to Merrillville for another dual meet. Fortunately, there were some diving boards readily available because Hobart made the Lady Pirates WALK THE PLANK on their way to an easy 135-39 VICTORY!! Our girls won EVERY EVENT but 1 and got double-wins from senior Becky Lozano (200 Free + 100 Fly), junior Delaney O'Brien (50 + 100 Free), and junior Alivia Ahner (Diving + 100 Back)!

GOOD LUCK LADIES!
Boys
On Tuesday, the boys also traveled to Munster for a CLASH OF TITANS in the NCC with both teams entering the meet UNDEFEATED. Unfortunately, the Seahorses had too much depth and the Brickies were sunk by a final score of 123-60. Sophomore Ethan Ferba (Diving) and senior Nathan Wright (100 Free) were the only individual winners for Hobart.
Thursday, Hobart hit the road over to Merrillville and put on a water show just off Broadway! The final score was an IMPRESSIVE 111-46 VICTORY for the Brickies as Hobart placed 1st in ALL THREE RELAYS and 9 out of 12 events ... 2 of those coming from senior Nathan Wright (200 + 100 Free)! Also reaching the wall first for Hobart individually were junior Chad Tomaga (200 IM), sophomore Jeydan Fifer (50 Free) and sophomore Nathaniel Mamushe (500 Free). Probably the highlight of the evening came on the diving board where sophomore SENSATION Ethan Ferba WON BIG and set a new 6-dive sophomore RECORD with a score of 270.5!!
