This month's Learner Profile is Caring! Our hallways are already full of examples of how we show we care for one another in our community. Ms. Casey's class started a school wide project project making hearts with kindness sayings, Ms. Lisa May started a 100 Acts of Kindness list outside the library, and 4th grade students are sharing what caring means to them on morning announcements. Check out the Kindness Calendar below and see how many acts of kindness your family can complete this month!
Last week we completed up our middle of the year STAR assessments. Family reports for both DIBELS reading assessments and STAR math and reading assessments will be sent home on Friday in your child's backpacks. The most important thing you can do to support your child's growth in reading is to read with them every night!
A friendly reminder about DROP OFF and PICK UP... Please do not leave your vehicle unattended on the the fire lane in front of the middle school. As soon as your child has loaded or unloaded, please exit so that another car can fill your spot. If you need to park, please find a spot in the parking lot, or on the circle after the gate.
In partnership,
Ashley

Questions and Answers from MTSS Coordinator, Meg Dangler
At AES, we screen all students to identify students needing additional support three times a year using STAR and DIBELS. For student’s needing additional support, our MTSS team along with the grade level team, use a data driven process to develop and implement evidence-based interventions and monitor students using progress monitoring. All stakeholders determine the best level of support using our MTSS approach of Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 support (this information was shared in an early communication).
When developing intensive, individual supports, a literacy or math specialist may administer individual diagnostic assessments to help plan the intervention. Classroom teacher’s day to day data and observations are also shared with specialists to create the best intervention possible. Parents are an intricate part of the team. This is an area we are intentionally strengthening here at AES. We have already sought parent’s input when we created Read Plans for students who have a reading deficiency. We will soon be sending out similar surveys to seek parent input with math and social/emotional skills that can be supported at home.
Our MTSS team consists of:
- MTSS Coordinator: Meg Dangler
- Our Administrators- Ashley Bodkins and Zoe Silberberg
- Literacy specialists: Heather Cabot, Kim Hayes, Margaret Hancock and Sara Reval
- Math specialists: Dana Alderman and Lauren Nitti
- Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education Specialist: Anne Uhlfleder
- School counselor: Shea Robinson
- School Social Worker: Steven Crooke
- Gifted Talented Teacher- Ada Flatt

Pitkin County Library Cards
Why should my child have a library card...
1. Having a library card gives a child a sense of belonging to the library.
2. With a library card, a child will have access to the computers at the library and free wi-fi connection, online databases, audio books and more!
3. Having a card and visiting the library often increases the opportunity to learn to read.
4. Children with a library card are more likely to see the library as a positive place and form a relationship with the librarians that allows them to feel comfortable asking for assistance with information.
5. Having a library card adds to the enthusiasm a child feels for the library.
Aspen Elementary SKIERS
At AES our essential agreements guide the way we behave and interact with others throughout our school in every setting. This year, we've adopted the SKIER acronym as a way to frame our essential agreements school wide. We hope that you will reinforce these positive attributes with your child at home.
At AES we believe in...
Supporting the whole child academically, emotional, physically and socially.
Differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
- Providing the skills to be lifelong members and productive members of a global society.
- Promoting and celebrating the love of learning.
- Developing partnerships of passionate, respectful, learners amongst students, staff, parents and community.
