Messages of Hope for Unity from Ms. Canela's English 11 Students

Students in Ms. Maria Canela’s English 11 class confronted the notion of race in America after reading Ta-Nehisi Coates' “Between the World and Me” by using their voices to spread messages of hope and racial unity for our country. Please listen to what our students have to say.

CSD Robotics Teams Competing Regionally

Cedarbrook’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics team Really...Simple Machines qualified for the quarterfinals and finished tied for eighth this past weekend at the Philadelphia Qualifying Tournament of the Pennsylvania FIRST Tech Challenge at Central High School. Facing mostly high school teams, the team competed in the challenge Relic Recovery. Following a sports model, FIRST® Tech Challenge teams design, build, program, and operate robots of their own design to play a floor game in an alliance format. Guided by adult Coaches and Mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas.

In December, the Myers Machines, competing against mostly older teams, received the Presentation Award at a Penn FIRST Lego League (FLL) qualifier at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy to advance to the FLL regional championship February 10 at Irvine Auditorium at the University of Pennsylvania. This year’s Lego League challenge is hydrodynamics - how to find, transport, use or dispose of water and includes utilizing mechanical design, programming, project research, and presentation skills in a high stress environment.

Black Scholars to Host Grammy-Nominated Karl "Dice Raw" Jenkins

The Black Scholars program will host Grammy Award-nominated Karl "Dice Raw" Jenkins, the star, producer and musical collaborator of "Henry Box Brown: A Hip Hop Musical" on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the Senior Cafe. All CHS students are invited to attend. The musical opens on Thursday, Feb. 1 at the Bonnell Auditorium at the Community College of Philadelphia, and recounts the tale of a slave who mailed himself in a box to Philadelphia to gain his freedom and went on to tell his story and fight slavery through performance. A five-time Grammy nominee, Jenkins has been a mainstay of the Philadelphia hip-hop scene since the 1990s, and most commonly associated as a principal songwriter/collaborator/producer for The Roots. Glenside Fourth Graders #choosekind

​Glenside fourth graders read the book ​Wonder by R.J. Palacio​​ then took a field trip to see the movie. After returning to school, students​ ​​compared and contrasted the book and movie. ​They explored the central theme of ​"kindness​"​ through guidance lessons and created ​their own precepts inspired by the book.

Cedarbrook Middle School Goes Crazy For Kindness

Cedarbrook Middle School created a life-size Instagram account and went crazy for kindness during their weeklong school spirit celebration.

Staff Find Their “Inner Drummer”

Focusing on African drumming, Elkins Park Music Teacher John Moran led CSD teachers, staff and EP Principal Gerry Fitzpatrick-Doria in a drum circle as a means to reduce stress and foster connectedness between participants at the second after-school wellbeing workshop of the year. Each participant had an opportunity to relax, refresh and laugh as they played a variety of percussion instruments. Wellbeing workshops are offered monthly to support the health and care of the CSD staff. February’s workshop is called “Gentle Yoga” and will be led by certified yoga instructor Kari Owens.

Make Up Early Dismissal | Wednesday, Jan. 31

Because of the two-hour weather delay this past Wednesday, Jan. 17, the early dismissal slated for that day has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 31. Dismissal times are as follows:

Elementary Schools: 2:45 p.m.

Elkins Park School 2:37 p.m.

Cedarbrook: 2:03 p.m.

Cheltenham HS: 1:25 p.m.

AP Registration Open through March 7

AP students received a letter about registering for AP testing and the AP Bulletin. Registration will be online this year and is now available. The link for information can be found here . The deadline for registration is March 7. There is no late registration this year. Please call Ms. Brett at 215-517-3782 if you have any questions.

2018-2019 CHS Course Selection

Starting on Jan. 30, guidance counselors will visit with 11th, 10th and 9th grade students in their English classrooms to discuss the course selection process. After the process meetings are complete, the online course selection window will be activated. Students will have until Sunday, Feb. 11 to finalize their requests. Starting on Monday, Feb. 12, the counselors will begin meeting with each student individually to verify their requested courses. Keep Flu out of School Initiative

An initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Keep Flu out of School offers tips for parents and guardians, teachers, nurses and students for the prevention of influenza among K-5 students.

Stay Informed | Policy Committee Update January 2018

On Jan. 23, Policy Committee co-chairs Julie Haywood and Joel Fishbein met with committee member Daniel Schultz, the Superintendent and members of the administrative team. Discussions included non-residents, facilities, student safety and student wellness. See presentation for full meeting details.

Stay Informed | Climate and Culture Presentation

Community members, students and administrators gathered at Wyncote Elementary on Thursday, Jan. 18 for the latest Climate and Culture meeting. Mindfulness Coach Cindy Goldberg spoke about her work in more than 50 elementary school classrooms. Each of the District's seven principals and other administrators presented on progress made since the previous Climate and Culture Meeting in October and the work that continues to support a healthy climate and culture.
