Winston Churchill is an eloquent and influential historical figure. He was born in 1874 in Marlborough, England. His childhood was filled with loneliness because his parents were never around. He was often cared for by his nanny. Throughout his life he has shown perseverance, strength and hard work. For example “ After 7 months of training, Churchill was given his first leave. Instead of going home to relax, Churchill wanted to see action, so he traveled to Cuba to watch Spanish troops put down a rebellion.” This shows that he has perseverance because he showed that instead of being upset about his first leave, he wanted to see how he could improve himself. Also “Six years after resigning as Prime Minister, Churchill was asked again to lead Britain” This shows that he had perseverance because instead of giving up after he resigned, he kept working and was asked 6 years later to come back and help Britain win the war. He also never gave up no matter what happened. However, he is best known for becoming the Prime Minister of England. During this time, World War 2 was going on and Churchill was able to lead his country through it. Winston Churchill once said, “Never, never, never, never give in.” From this quote we know that Winston Churchill was a very strong person who got himself through the darkest days. Overall Winston Churchill was very influential because he decided to never give up no matter how big the problem was.

Cause and Effect Paragraph

Segregation was a huge problem in the 1900’s. African Americans were not allowed to use the same restrooms as white people, were not allowed in restaurants and were not able to have the same rights as Americans. The problem was, African Americans were not allowed to play in the MLB. Branch Rickey, coach of the Dodgers wanted to change that. Jackie Robinson, a African American baseball player who played in the negro league, was asked to meet with Branch Rickey to discuss him coming to the “Brown Dodgers.” When he got there, Rickey had asked him to not only play for him, but for him to play in the MLB. He was told that he was going to have to face racial slurs, name-calling and abuse. Jackie Robinson was a strong person who was able to handle all of the harm that was brought to him. Branch Rickey didn't ask for someone who can fight back, he needed to find someone who was strong enough not to fight back and Jackie Robinson was just the person he needed. Jackie Robinson had to face one of the most difficult times, head on with only a few people behind him. He was able to end segregation in baseball for good, and yet he still never fought back.
