Fall sports recognized at Jamboree
Soccer - Coach Erpelding
On Friday we played Seabury and we were able to gut out a 4-2 win. We did not play particularly well in the fist 15 minutes of the game, played like it was our first game of the season. We panicked a lot and gave the ball away too much, but once we settled down we were fine. We got down 0-1 around the 25th minute from a set piece. We committed a dumb foul from 25 out and they took a shot which junior William Sangill spilled and they were right there to put it away. I did like the way we responded. We went down and got a corner right after. We finally got it tied about 10 minutes later off a corner. Junior Keaton Herron played in a great corner which junior Alex Kooken back-heeled. Junior Jace McCormick was right there to put the rebound away. We got another corner a few minutes later when Keaton put another great ball in play that junior Dylan Meier headed towards the goal. The ball was deflected and senior Brant Miller buried it for the goal, this was Brant's first varsity goal. In the second half we were up 3-1 when junior Colby Lawhorn ran down a through ball and he beat the keeper 1v1. This was Colby's first varsity goal. At this point this is where we have to grow up a little and learn to put our opponents away. Up 3-1 they are gassed, we have to bury them. We did the opposite and let the foot off the gas and Seabury cut the score to 3-2 on a ball we should have cleared. We would make it 4-2 with 11 seconds left in the game as junior Daniel Grosdidier played a ball across which junior Jack Kleinweber played back across to Keaton who finished it with a goal.
Overall we played OK but we can play much better! Junior Will Sangill was our POG making 11 saves. He came up huge a few times helping us preserve our lead and the win! The team is on the road twice this week traveling to Atchison Maur Hill tonight, Varsity starts at 4:00pm followed by JV. Then on Thursday travel to Piper to kick off the Frontier League schedule, JV at 4:30pm followed by varsity.
Football - Coach Hayden
The Cardinals looked different this year offensively, moving the ball on the ground with ease while also having an efficient passing attack. The defense flew around the field all night, causing several turnovers- many of which would have went for touchdowns had we played on a full field. The coaching staff was very proud of the effort they saw on the field during the jamboree and are excited to see what the team can do this season. We do know that they will play hard every snap. The Cardinals open their season this Friday at home against KC Piper at 7:00 pm. It is the Midco game of the week and should be a great game against a good Piper team.

Coach’s Comments
Today was a great day... in a lot of ways. First, 23 of runners ran time trials a year ago as well as
today. Of those 23 runners, 19 ran faster today than they did a year ago at this time. Many of them by
a significant margin. The following athletes ran over a minute faster this year compared to last year:
Mackenzie, Ellie, Hannah, Harleigh, Chloe, Traeger, Steven, Ammon with the biggest improvement
over last year’s time trials going to Ashley Metcalf running 3 minutes 25 seconds faster today! In fact,
Ashley ran just over a minute faster than her season best last year! And, Ashley wasn’t the only one to
accomplish that feat. Other athletes that ran faster today than their season best times last year were:
Mackenzie, Stella, Harleigh, Hannah, and Steven.
I think we saw today a little of what we were expecting. Our girls team is an experienced team that is
motivated to improve on last year’s performance. For example, today our #9 finisher’s time would have
been 5th best a year ago at time trials. We had 13 girls break 25 minutes whereas last year at time
trials we had 8 girls accomplish that. And, that is without running Kate this morning who will be near
the front our pack. These girls have put in a lot of summer work and it’s going to show. Our boys team
overall is a much younger team and with that youth we expect to see a lot of improvement week to
week throughout the season. Jerratt was in good form today running sub-18 minutes by himself, which
is not easy to do without competition. Our freshman boys, led by Conor Dunback, ran great... many of
them running a 5K for the very first time. If today is any indication of what’s to come, we can expect
good things from our boys team this season.
