What IS Marijuana?

Marijuana is a shredded, green-brown substance made up of dried flowers, leaves, and stems from the plant called Cannabis sativa. Hashish, another (stronger) form of marijuana, looks like brown or black cakes/balls.

Short-Term Effects

Marijuana's long-term effects may be more life-changing, the short term effects also cause some severe changes to a person. Those changes include:



  • Sensory distortion
  • Panic attacks
  • Anxiety
  • Poor coordination of movement
  • Lowered reaction time
  • Fatigue
  • Increased heart beat (higher risk for heart attack

Long-Term Effects

  • Marijuana smokers strongly risk damaging the cells in the bronchial passages. There's a high risk of respiratory tract infections, and it can cause lung cancer.
  • Heavy marijuana smokers frequently have lower life satisfaction, more relationship problems, and poorer health than non-users with similar backgrounds.

Quickly stopping a person's use of marijuana can change many physical and psychological things about their body.

Some physical symptoms a person may experience with marijuana withdrawal include:

Not only does withdrawal from marijuana cause physical differences to a person, they also cause psychological issues to a person. Those symptoms include:

  • Changes in eating (reduced appetite, weight loss)

  • In North Korea, marijuana is legal and not even considered a drug.
  • Marijuana has been legal in Alaska since 1975, and still is today.
  • Marijuana is legal in the country of Uruguay, in South America.
