Writing a Thesis Statement
Mr. Roberts says, "It's as easy as 1-2-3!"
1. Create a question about the topic.
What is the topic? Sharks
Form a question about the topic. Why are some people afraid of sharks?2. Find reasons that answer your question.
What are some reasons some people are afraid of sharks?
Find at least TWO or THREE reasons.
Sharks are vicious predators.
Sharks swim much faster than people.
Sharks have hundreds of scary-looking teeth.
3. Put it all together.
Take the information from steps 1 & 2 and combine it.
ANSWER THE QUESTION by restating it in your thesis statement.
Why are some people afraid of sharks?
Some people are afraid of sharks because (step 1)
they are vicious predators,
they swim much faster than humans,
and
they have hundreds of scary-looking teeth. (step 2)Remember that the thesis statement is the ROAD MAP for writing your paper. Make sure you write about what your thesis statement says.
