High Ability Parent Book Study
Are you interested in learning strategies to best meet the needs of your high ability child? Hamilton Southeastern School district is pleased to offer a four-session book study on A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children by James T Webb, Janet L. Gore, Edward R. Amend, and Arlene R. DeVries. The book is considered a classic for high ability parents (Dr. Jan Davison). Meetings follow a discussion format without lectures. Walk away with strategies for addressing intensities, perfectionism, sibling issues, and underachievement. It’s a great way to network with other parents of high ability children.
Sessions will be on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:00 pm at the Administration Building on 13485 Cumberland Road in the West Conference Room. Meeting dates are:
October 25th
November 1st
November 15th
The book club is limited to twelve participants, and only one member per family. Late registrants will be placed on a waiting list for a spring morning book club of the same book. I will be offering a book study of Mindset by Carol Dweck in the spring; it will focus on a conversation about growth vs. fixed mindset at a one-time meeting.
I have enough copies of both books for all participants. Books must be returned at the end of the book studies.
If you would like to join the group, contact Meg Strnat, Hamilton Southeastern’s High Ability Coordinator at mstrnat@hse.k12.in.us , who will be facilitating the book study discussions. Please include your child’s name, teacher, and school so that I can send home a copy of A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children before the meetings start.
Counselor's Corner
I had the privilege of visiting the first and second grade classrooms and presenting Second Steps lessons this week and last week. The Second Steps curriculum is a research based program that teaches social-emotional skills to students. While in the first grade classrooms, we focused on the skill of following directions and discussed the importance of using this skill in school. While in the second grade classroom, we discussed the skills of focusing attention and listening and why these skills are important in school. I enjoyed visiting your child’s classroom and look forward to visiting again soon!
Sincerely,

Holiday Assistance Program
Hello Harrison Parkway Elementary Families!
The holidays are fast approaching and the Good Samaritan Network of Hamilton County is accepting applications/requests for their annual Holiday Assistance program. Distribution dates are: Thanksgiving, November 19th and Christmas, December 10th.
For over thirty years they have been helping at-risk families within Hamilton County. Last year, GSN's Holiday Assistance provided critical assistance for over 28,000 people! Assistance is given for both Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays including food boxes. Additionally, for Christmas, each child will receive new clothing items, socks, underwear and toys (typically items three per child).
Again this year, "Holiday Assistance" forms, and detailed information, are readily available online (www.gsn.org). Simply go to the website and select the "Events" tab and then select "Holiday Assistance". There you will be able to select the file(s) you need for printing. Forms are available in English or Spanish. The application forms are also attached to this newsletter.
It is very important that you complete and return the forms as quickly as possible to ensure that your family is personally sponsored. These forms can also be completed ONLINE which is the preferred method. Go to (www.gsn.org/holiday-assistnance) to complete the forms.
These forms should NOT be returned to the school.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 317-915-4210 ext. 1787.
Thank you!

Information for Early Childhood Classroom Peers – For Families in the Fishers Community Applications for peers in our Early Childhood classrooms are being accepted now.
Early Childhood in HSE creates an environment that affords all children the opportunity to develop friendships while becoming leaders and role models. Throughout the educational experience, children will learn about acceptance and diversity. Children enrolled in the four half day (M-Th) Early Childhood classroom will experience a student-centered preschool curriculum enriched with social skills and language skills along with academic activities. The skills and activities are linked to the Indiana State Standards for preschool which are precursor skills designed to promote kindergarten readiness.
Children must be at least three years old and not kindergarten eligible. For information regarding how to enroll your child in this enriching learning opportunity, please stop by Brooks School Elementary for an application. If you have any questions about the peer program please contact the early childhood secretary, Beth Kiel, at 915-4250 or send an email to: earlychildhoodcontact@hse.k12.in.us

If you are interested in having lunch with your student, you must call the office at 915-4210 before 9:30 am the day of your visit. We can only accommodate 10 visitors each day, so reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, you must have a current background check on file with the school. You are welcome to order a school lunch, bring a sack lunch, or you can just sit and visit. Please do not bring fast food or soda, due to various student allergies. Per HSE Policy, pictures of students are not allowed to be taken in the cafeteria and please do not use cell phones during lunch. Thank you for supporting these policies.
Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. As a new feature this year, applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 2:00PM. This is to allow enough time to accurately deliver messages to teachers, as well as time to confirm the change if necessary. Please do not call the school after 2:00PM to make a transportation change except in the case of extreme emergencies.

The Hamilton Southeastern School System is in a continued partnership with Youth Mentoring Initiative. It is YMI’s vision to provide mentoring support for students by building and sustaining a mentoring community here in Fishers.
