Coker Cubs Weekly News
Coker Mission--Every Child, Every Day
We support and foster a positive community of successful, life-long learners and leaders by meeting the needs of every individual while challenging each one to reach full potential.
Journaling Across the Curriculum
As you may recall from the beginning of the year professional development session, we reviewed our campus performance through a Data Debrief presentation. We discussed a thorough plan to address the accountability system’s four indices.
One campus focus to improve student writing is journaling across the curriculum in K-5. In an effort to address Index 1 (plan to improve student success based on lowest system safeguards) each grade level chairman will participate in reviewing student journals during the GLC meeting on Tuesday, December 8th.
Kindergarten through fifth grade teachers please gather a Science journal from a student is performing on the academic level of high, medium and low (a total of 3 student journals per class). GLCs are asked to bring 3 student Science journals from each teacher on the grade level to the scheduled GLC meeting. Members of the Leadership Team will provide feedback and return the journals right away.
Board Appreciation Month
The theme is “Super-Heroes for Schools” – Coker would like to present the board with school’s posters, spirit items, artwork, and videos at the January 11th board meeting.
Please let me know what you if you are planning to develop something. You can pony items to Marie King, RAMEC, Superintendent’s Office or to Laura Breeden, RAMEC, Suite 605.
Jeans Days
Staff members are expected to observe the dress code at all times. Jeans days must be limited to administrative approved events throughout the year. Administrators try to accommodate staff members by linking jeans days to events and awards such as "get over the hump day" and "college shirt day" . For example, if it's spirit day, you must wear a Coker shirt to wear jeans. If it is wear blue to recognize Diabetes Awareness Month, you must participate to wear jeans. The only exception is if you have been awarded a leader purple shirt. If jeans are continuously worn without administrative approval or without participation, jeans days will be suspended indefinitely. There are no exceptions. Please review bulletins and information to insure that you and your team is staying in compliance.

Holiday Reminders
Holiday assemblies and performances that contain religious references should contain references to a variety of religious holidays. Secular holiday songs must be mixed into the program.
The law in Texas now permits the display of a nativity scene during the holidays, but it must be displayed with other secular or religious symbols from other faiths, and the school may not use any other "promotion" of a Christian viewpoint. Also, if a nativity scene is displayed, the law would still hold that the school will have opened itself up to requests to allow other religions to display symbols from holidays. This can get complicated. As before, Christmas trees are acceptable to display, as are Santas, reindeer, etc. The best way to avoid problems is to stay as secular as possible with all displays.
Law now allows public educators to wish students and each other “Merry Christmas.” Employees and students may also use other specific holiday greetings toward each other, including Hanukkah and Kwanzaa greetings. This does NOT, however, mean that teachers and school staff can actively engage in any promotion of a particular religion or proselytize to students at all.
If a school allows for parents to distribute messages at school-sponsored events, then it is very difficult for principals to exclude such distribution solely because it contains a religious theme. A best practice is to make it clear that at school-sponsored events (like classroom parties), parents will not be allowed to distribute any material (except to their own child), regardless of the nature of the message.

Coker Handbook Tidbits-Cafeteria Duty
It is important for cafeteria monitors to arrive to cafeteria duty on time to help monitor students by continuously moving around the cafeteria. Assigned staff will remain in the cafeteria during the scheduled time to help the children, assist when necessary, keep order and make sure the dining room is a safe environment. All staff members need to watch the clock so that lunch times begin and end promptly to help the campus stay on schedule during lunch times. Concerns should be reported to the office immediately. If you are sending a student to the nurse from the cafeteria, please make sure to fill out a nurse slip and send with them. If it is a serious injury, please be sure to escort the student.
