Dear Calvin Park Families,

We are looking forward to seeing all of our students together at school on Monday, September 14! Thank you again for your cooperation and patience as we practice and modify (... and practice again...) new routines as needed. We have been impressed on a daily basis with our students' sense of responsibility, their resilience, and the respect that they are demonstrating for themselves and others. For our students who have opted for remote learning, you should have received more information about the LDSB Virtual Elementary School last week. It is scheduled to begin on September 24.

Thank you for screening your child every morning before school. If your child feels ill or exhibits any symptoms, you must keep your student home and report their illness and absence using the LDSB SAFE ARRIVAL absence reporting tool. If a student’s symptoms are related to a pre-existing medical condition, seek advice from your health care provider. If the symptoms are new, contact your health care provider or take your child to the COVID-19 assessment centre for testing and guidance.

If your child has a chronic medical condition or needs to take medication at school, and you haven't filled out the necessary medical forms this year, please contact Ms. Pettingill and she will email you the appropriate forms.

Now, more than ever, it is really essential that we continue to work together at home and at school to stress the importance of maintaining social distancing, regular hand washing/sanitizing, wearing a face covering, and limiting social groups. Please take time to reinforce these health measures with your child.

What if my child develops symptoms of COVID-19 at school?


There are three options to use to report a student absence:

  • call the automated attendance phone line at 1-855-257-9349 **Always enter "lates" as a full day even if the child will only be absent for half a day. It will adjust automatically once the student arrives.
  • use the SchoolMessenger App on your phone.
  • use the SchoolMessenger website portal.

Our school uses a broadcasting tool called SchoolMessenger to communicate important school information with families via text, email or phone message. We will also use it for sharing Weekly Updates to Families.

Registered parents/guardians will receive these messages through contact information collected in our student information system. Parents/guardians may choose how to receive these alerts by text message, email or phone call with the exception of emergency events which will always be communicated via all contact methods on file with the school. If parents/guardians choose to receive text messages, they must opt-in due to potential charges from their cell phone carrier.

It is important that parents/guardians ensure schools have the most up-to-date contact information at the beginning of the school year. If your contact information changes during the school year, parents/guardians are asked to contact the school with the updated information.

In addition, teachers will also be able to take advantage of an instant message option to keep students and families up to date. Parents/guardians will be invited to join a group and receive messages related specifically to their group. Information on how to join groups will be shared directly with students and families by the teacher.

School Messenger App

All of our electronic communications tools can be accessed anytime, anywhere online and/or via Smartphones. To take advantage of this convenience and functionality, we encourage you to create a School Messenger account on your desktop, laptop, tablet and/or download the SchoolMessenger app. While an account is not required to use these new tools, it will allow you to review your contact information and communication preferences, and it stores all of your messages in one place.

At this time, parents/guardians are not allowed to enter the school building in order to limit the contacts that our students are exposed to. If you need to drop off an item that your child has forgotten or pick up your child early, please do not come upstairs to our office. Please call the school ahead of time to set a time for us to meet you at the front of the school to meet your child or to drop off a forgotten item. Thank you for helping us to keep our students safe.

School Entry and Dismissal

Only students who are arriving on school buses should enter and exit through the main doors. Students who walk to school, ride their bike, get a drive or take the city bus, should use the doors on either end of the school. Students should not enter the school until after 8:00 (unless they are on an early school bus) and should go directly to their assigned desk in their classroom.


Please return all borrowed Chromebooks and iPads (and power cords!) to the school as soon as possible. There is a box for Calvin Park devices just inside the school doors. Please label the device, place it in a bag, and remember to include the power cord as well!

If your child is participating in remote learning, students who already have a device from last year may keep them to use for online learning. A reminder that school Chromebooks are to be used for learning activities and are not for personal use.

School Organization

Our school organization of 16 classes is based on projected enrolment numbers from June and is subject to change depending on our actual number of students in September. Typically, this results in some changes to our school organization that can impact staffing and classroom placements. This year, the actual numbers will also be impacted by the number of opt-out students at our school who will be enrolled in the LDSB Virtual School as of September 24th. Our current in-person actual enrolment is lower than our projected enrolment number. We will continue to finalize these numbers this week as we try to accommodate requests for changes to in-school learning as soon as we can. If you are considering a change, please notify the school as soon as possible. The deadline for changing to in-school learning is September 14th. We will keep you informed of any changes in school organization that may be necessary.

Information About the LDSB Virtual Elementary School

If you have chosen the remote learning option for your child, the LDSB Virtual School for remote learners (Kindergarten to Grade 12) will be launched on September 8th. Please check your email for a communicate message regarding virtual learning. Please remember that the deadline to opt back into in-person learning is Monday, September 14. If you have changed your mind and would like to request a return to in person learning for your child, please contact us directly as soon as possible email phone: 613-542-2796
