Willow Lane News
September (First) Edition
"News for Willow Lane" by Mr. Weimann
Welcome to your very first, very own newspaper. As you can see, it is not actually made out of paper. The brand new Willow Lane Newspaper Club will be using this online forum to share all kinds of information a variety of ways. There are pictures as well as text, and soon there will be video and sound bites to experience.
The following stories are just a sample of the news you can expect to see in your online school newspaper. They are 100% student-created. (I edited them minimally: if I made four changes to any of them, I'd be surprised.)
The news team is very excited to get started reporting on Willow Lane happenings. Even if you are not on the news team, you can submit your own school news for the newspaper club to consider adding to the next edition. Here's how to do it: Either bring your news to room 212, type it in a Google doc. and share it with Mr. Weimann, or give it to the office to be placed in Mr. Weimann's mailbox. Always include your full name, grade, and name of your teacher. Who knows? Your name could be in print in the next "Willow Lane News". Happy writing, and enjoy your September (First) Edition.
"Carly's Swim" by Evan
On September 20, 2014, nine year old Carly _ swam 190 laps at the Emmaus High school pool to raise money for diabetes. Not only is it incredible that Carly swam 3 miles for diabetes, she herself is a type 1 diabetic. That means she has to wear her pink ipod-looking insulin pump. Carly was diagnosed with diabetes when she was three years old. Her pancreas does not produce insulin which is what the body uses to control blood sugar levels. At just around two o’clock in the afternoon, Carly and former Olympic swimmer, Kristy Kowal, were off. After one hour and thirty-four minutes of the crowd cheering, Carly and Kristy finally finished the whole 3 miles. When Carly came out of the water, the crowd was ringing cow bells, blowing party horns and cheering. When Carly was asked how she felt she smiled and said, “Awesome!” So far Carly’s swim has raised $16,000 for the American Diabetes Association. As Carly says, “Diabetes is tough but I’m tougher” She certainly proved it with her swim.
"5th Grade Assembly" by Erin
Hello, I’m Erin _, and right in this very school we have a huge surprise coming up! Everyday for the past (three) weeks 5th graders have been working hard on fun and exciting new things for this school. In one (day) you will witness the most extraordinary and thrilling assembly Willow Lane has ever seen! There will be skits on the Buddy Bench and School Store! They will tell you all about that there. There will also be a school wide contest, (But, I won’t tell you anymore about that.) Also, lots of singing and music. Get ready to be blown away by the new Willow Lane 5th grade students.
"Willow Lane's Best Friend: Lightning" by Jillian
Willow Lane is a very fun and nice place, but there is a nice friend that joins the school and makes us happy. Lightning mostly joins us at assemblies. Lightning comes out and dances to the school song. We voted on Lightning's name when he was first coming to our school. Lightning is fun and brilliant and “ALWAYS” happy. Believe it or not he has great moves, too. You’ll see Lightning in the hall sometimes at concerts, he’ll be everywhere. So whenever you see him in the hall looking for a fist bump or high five give him one. Always smile, and all of that would make him “so” happy. Look out for Lightning!
"Carly's Big Swim" by Alexis and Lindsey
Me, Lindsey, and our friend Rachel went to Carly Lennett’s big swim of 188 laps across the Emmaus pool to raise money for diabetes. Once it hit two-o’clock Carly and the silver medalist, Kristy Kowall, jumped into the pool and began to swim to their goal of 188 laps across the pool. It took an hour and a half to reach their goal. Once Carly and Kristy were at 125 laps, Lindsey, Rachel and I headed down to cheer Carly on down there. When Carly would take a breath on the right side of the pool, she would smile at us. Once she hit 180, a woman was handing out cowbells so that we could cheer her on once she hit her goal. We rang our cowbells as loud as we could because Carly and Kristy reached their goal.
"Things Get Fishy at Willow Lane" by Morgan
Willow Lane and other schools join in on a project based learning activity which might be the best since Mr. Cooper's Pinball Project.
(Lower Macungie) Willow lane Principal Dr. Moyer takes a chance to do this exciting project which all the Willow Lane students are very excited for. What the kids will be learning about in this activity is learning the trout life cycle. They named this project, “ Trout in the Classroom “. Despite the “Classroom” part in its name, the tank will be near the bus entrance when you enter the building. THats all for today students! Have a great school day!

"The Cardboard Box Challenge" by Connor
The cardboard box challenge is here! The kids in Mrs. Dweck’s classes (3rd, 4th, and 5th grade) are making things out of cardboard. You can make whatever you want and enter it into the Box Trolls Cardboard Challenge. This is a really cool challenge because you can use your imagination to make anything. There’s something else too and that is the prize. The winner of the Box Trolls Cardboard Challenge wins a computer for their school.
"Willow Lane vs. Harrison" by Caroline
My name is Caroline. I went to Harrison Ave. for 3 years: kindergarten, first grade, second grade. Harrison is in NY, short for New York. I think Willow Lane is better than Harrison because… first of all we did not have recess everyday and there were no playground aides. Next of all the library is more organized and a great place to read. Lastly, we did not have a school song and I love Willow’s school song. Finally, we did not have a song on the announcements.
THAT IS WHY I LOVE WILLOW LANE!
Love,
Caroline
