A MINUTE WITH DR. MAXWELL
Dear East Families,
Happy Fall to everyone! The year is well underway with great learning, exciting events, and most importantly-happy children!
The Jackson R-2 School District is currently utilizing a program called i-ReadyⓇ Diagnostic that helps teachers effectively assess students in Reading and Math. The results allow us to provide individualized instruction based on each student’s unique needs. If you were unable to attend, please feel free to call the school and schedule an appointment or a phone conference.
One way we use these results is through individualized instruction time throughout our day known as SPEAR-IT (Students Progressing Everyday and Achieving Results with Individual Targets) Time for reading instruction and RtI (Response to Intervention). This is a time that your child will receive instruction based on their individual strengths and weaknesses. If you have questions about what your child is working on during this time please feel free to contact us!
Please pay close attention to your child’s newsletters and teacher’s emails sent each week. Our teachers are working hard to provide a home connection piece to keep everyone informed as well as provide examples and activities to extend your child’s learning at home.
Sincerely,
Jessica Maxwell, Principal
GETTING TO KNOW DR. MAXWELL
Welcome to East Elementary! I thought I would take a minute to share a little bit about myself, for those of you who don’t know me. I am proud to be from Jackson and graduated from Jackson High School. I graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with Bachelor, Masters, and Specialist Degrees. I graduated from University of Missouri with my Doctorate in Educational Leadership. This is my 14th year working on the Jackson R2 team, five as a third grade teacher, and nine as principal.
In 2007, I married Ronnie Maxwell and we have two amazing children Anniston (8) and Collin (5). We enjoy being outside and watching sports, especially football. I also love to run, attend football games, and of course spend time with family and friends.
It has been a joy getting to know your children over the past couple of weeks. If there is anything you need, please feel free to call me at 573-243-5271 or email me at jmaxwell@jackson.k12.mo.us.

MRS. CRIDDLE'S CORNER
Dear Families,
We are already almost through the first quarter! Wow, this year is moving very quickly. We appreciate all those who attended Parent-Teacher Conferences. School and family connections are key and it’s our goal is to communicate how your child is doing and how we can help increase his/her learning.
Our teachers and students are working hard to serve those in need! East Elementary teachers and JHS students are hosting a Snack Drive for our Power Pack Program. This program currently feeds over 200 students/families each week as well as provides children snacks every day at school. If you are able to help, please send the snacks to East Elementary. Every snack donated will be used in Jackson R2's Power Pack Program. Thank you for your support.
I have one quick reminder that all students are dismissed for class at 7:50 am. It is crucial that your child is here every day on time. Learning begins promptly at 8:00 am for morning early childhood students and K-4 and 12:00 pm for afternoon early childhood students.

THE BUZZ WITH MRS. BROOKE
We have been busy little bees in the month of September! A few of the highlights include our “Little Indian Captain of the Night” where two of our sweet students, Jagger Rademaker and Connor Monnat, represented the Early Childhood Center at the Jackson vs. Cape Central game. After being introduced, they were able to go on the field and assist with the coin toss. We are fortunate to have such wonderful partners in the Bank of Missouri to sponsor such a fun event! We look forward to other such events with them, like guest readers in the classrooms, in the future.
We also hosted our Grandparents Day where we had many of our favorite people come to visit in the classroom. Our families were able to not only see our classrooms and enjoy a snack, but also play on the playground with us! We love when our families come to visit and spend time with us! The next time we have an opportunity to visit with your child’s teacher will be for Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday, September 26th and Tuesday, October 1st.
One quick reminder... If you have not done this already please put an extra pair of clothes in your child's backpack. We are running low and if you have any extra clothes to donate for our little friends we would greatly appreciate it!
In the month of October we also plan to visit Knowlan Family Farms to learn more about apples, pumpkins, and other farm things! I cannot wait to see what our students learn from this adventure!

MRS. MOYERS' MESSAGE
During the month of October, two important topics are addressed in Counseling with students: disability awareness and bullying prevention.
As a District, October 7 - 11 will be recognized as Disability Awareness Week. While one of the goals is to educate students about what it means to have a disability and what different disabilities can mean for the people who have them, the most important goal is to stress that a person with a disability, such as my son Moses who has Down syndrome, is a person first. Secondly, instead of focusing on what a person can’t do due to a disability, it is important to recognize and celebrate what he can do. Teaching students about these things helps to foster understanding, empathy, and inclusion for all people regardless of their ability level.
The other topic that will be covered is bullying prevention. To me, one of the first steps to preventing bullying behavior is to ensure that students understand what bullying is. Stopbullying.gov defines bullying as “...unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.” (https://www.stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying/index.html) A few years ago, the students and staff at East Elementary voted to adopt a definition that had the same components of that definition but that would be easier for our K-4 students to understand and remember. The East Elementary definition of bullying is “When someone is being hurtful or harmful to you, on purpose, over and over and over again, and you can’t get that person to stop.” Bullying is a very serious issue and so it is important that we are all aware of what it is (and what it isn’t) and to use the term correctly. If you feel your student is involved in a bullying situation, do not hesitate to contact me. You can also fill out an anonymous online bullying form by going to the Jackson R2 District webpage or the East Elementary webpage and clicking on the icon that says “Stand Up, Speak Out, Stop Bullying Now”.

NEWS FROM THE NURSES
On Thursday, Oct. 24th, CCHD (Cape County Health Department) will be at East in the morning (only) to do Flu Vaccinations. Last year they had shots and no nasal mist and we are expecting that again this year. Early Childhood students will need to have a parent/adult with them. Watch for the consent forms to be sent home the week of October 7th. Cost is $20; (free if you have MC) Check should be made out to "CCHD".
The nurses office is in need of underwear and pants, all sizes.
LICE!!!!! Did that get your attention? We wanted to make sure everyone was aware that if you would receive a notice (the dreaded lice letter) in your child's backpack to PLEASE check their head (someone in their class may have had it and we need parents to make sure that their child is lice free). What if your child has it?? PLEASE alert the nurses (Tosha or Angie)- we can help! We want to prevent the spread of lice and we can only do that if we are AWARE that your child has it.

HOW TO INCREASE YOUR CHILD’S VOCABULARY
Expanding vocabulary is a lifelong process that begins during a child’s earliest months. A child’s vocabulary grows rapidly to around 2,000 words by his/her fifth birthday. Your child learns that words represent objects and actions. You can help to expand your child’s vocabulary if you:
1. Teach the names of everyday objects as you experience daily activities
together
2. Add new information to expand on what your child is saying, and ask
questions to stimulate thought and language
3. Help your child describe a simple object in as many ways as possible
