The Pirate Way
Hello Pirates!
Welcome to September! We have been so busy at OHS! This week we had Back to School Night at OHS and I want to personally thank the over 800 people who attended our activity packed evening. There are pictures of the exciting evening event below in the newsletter. This week our Pirate CCAN team (College and Career Access Network) attended a professional development that will jumpstart our campus focusing heavily on college applications and FAFSA completion. We had many sporting events on and off campus, and our assets clubs have began again this week. As busy as we have been since the beginning of school, the month of September is no different! September is full of spirit days, career fairs, athletics, clubs, field trips, and visits from Love on a Leash. Thank goodness we can rest up for these exciting adventures with a three day weekend!
Please have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. Stay safe and we will see you on Tuesday!
Pirates you are a part of something big! You belong and will always belong in the Oceanside High School Pirate Community. What an amazing feeling to realize you belong to something bigger than the individual Pirate, but rather part of a 100 year plus Pirate Ship Community!
Regardless of where you may go and no matter what you end up accomplishing the one thing that you have to count on is that you will ALWAYS be a PIRATE!
Stay safe! Know you are loved and belong to the Pirate community - this is the Pirate Way!

OHS PIRATE SPORTS UPDATE
Girls Golf wins again
The Oceanside girls golf team is playing an old-fashioned game of limbo with its home coure these days.
The Pirates set another team low score record defeating Southwest (Imperial Valley), 209-296 at the Oceanside Municipal Golf Course Thursday afternoon.
Lia Nance took match medalist honors with a 37, followed by Kassidy Stevens' 39. Danyele Bertino shot a 43, while Maggie McMahan and Lelia Kai Hernandez both shot 45s as the Pirates stay unbeaten with a 4-0 record.
Girls Volleyball deals TCC loss
Tri-City Christian must have thought the Oceanside girls volleyball team were playing with a stacked deck of cards.
The Pirates had 24 service aces from its starters en route to sweeping the Eagles, 25-21, 25-8 25-18, in non-league play in the steamy Wally Molifua Gymnasium Thursday.
Setter Elena Gonzalez-Hughes led the Pirates (2-0 overl) with 9 aces, 19 assists and 4 kills. Mikayla Poumele-Flores (7 kills) had 8 aces and Faye Naotala had 3 aces all in the second set. Ava Knatz added 7 kills, 8 digs and two blocks to lead the defense for OHS.
OHS Football
The last time Oceanside's football team won a game was on a foggy night nearly two years ago.
The Pirates defeated Ramona, 35-33, in double overtime, and they have been a fog ever since.
OHS had lost 13 consecutive games, making it the worst stretch of football in nearly 80 years until Friday night against Santa Fe Christian. Oceanside awoke from its haze in a big way in Coach Fale Poumele's home debut, defeating the Eagles, 22-3, thanks to a punishing defense and opportunistic offense in front of a delirious crowd inside John Carroll Stadium. The defense held Santa Fe Christian to two first downs and 11 yards total offense in the second half. Geordan Beamon had three sacks and Jayden Pulu made some punishing hits and recovered a fumble. Trailing 3-0 midway through the third quarter, quarterback Andrew Miller (16-of-28, 220 yards) connected with Ayden Goodwin (5 catches, 80 yards) on a 34-yard strike in the left corner of the end zone. The PAT was missed, but the Pirates took a 6-3 lead.
On its next drive, running back Georgie Nua (9 touches, 95 yards) found an opening on the right side for a 21-yard touchdown. Christian Sanchez-Barba added the extra point, giving Oceanside its largest lead of the young season, 13-3.
Then, the defense took over in the fourth quarter. Pulu recovered a muffed punt for the Pirates' third touchdown in less than 10 minutes. Then, with the Eagles pinned back deep in their own territory, another ball-handling error caused a safety for OHS.
Cross Country grabs more medals
The Oceanside cross country makes its yearly trek to the Wolf Pack Invitational at West Hills, and coach Jesse Guillen knows by the medal count if his boys and girls teams are on the right track to a successful season.
Survey says....Yes, they are after bringing home six individual medals amongst 500 runners, who ran under warm conditions (82 degrees, cool breeze and 83 % humidity). The Girls and Boys Frosh raced covered 1.5 miles, while the Boys (10th-12th grade) ran 2.1 miles over dirt trails with a 200-yard incline.
Junior Samantha Chan took sixth place with a personal best time of 11:00. In the sophomore race, Maila Guillen cut a minute off her best time on the course to take 9th place and a top-10 spot overall.
For the boys Kyle Vanwagner (9:18) medaled in the frosh race. Junior Alex Torres (11:39) knocked two minutes off his best course time and Oliver Danielson, who did not race last week, came back strong with an 11:38 and took home a medal. Newcomer Jakob Mueller had the fastest OHS time of the day (11:28) in his first-ever race.

OHS PTSO
For those new to OHS, PTSO includes Parents, Teachers and Students to support the school community. Some of our goals are to promote parent interaction, support the faculty and staff and promote student achievement. Each year is a bit different so we welcome your ideas on ways we can support the school. The donations we receive and the funds we raise go toward staff appreciation events, teacher and club grants, student events, and more. We work closely with our principal Mrs.Garrahy, the administrators and counseling team to be responsive to current needs. All members have a vote in how our funds are used and we have a few openings for leadership positions if you want to give some time.
If you would like to join us or renew your membership for the year, please fill out the form here: OHS PTSO Form 2023-24. If you are interested in volunteering or serving on the board, please indicate that on the form.
Whether you participate in meetings or not, you can support our efforts with a tax-deductible donation. Please go here: PTSO Donation Page (Paypal or CC) or use our new venmo @osideptso. And please join us for our restaurant nights throughout the year.
We typically meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm.
