Congratulations to Hewitt-Trussville Middle School...2018 Attorney General Steve Marshall Safe Schools Initiative Award of Excellence Winner
Wednesday, April 17, 2019 Attorney General Steve Marshall presented the 2019 Attorney General's Safe Schools Initiative Award of Excellence to Dr. Berry, Principal of Hewitt-Trussville Middle School.
In these times, we are all intensely aware of the serious responsibility our schools carry for the safekeeping of our children," said Attorney General Marshall. "The Alabama Safe Schools Awards of Excellence is an important tradition of the Attorney General’s Office, to recognize schools throughout our state for dedication and excellence in keeping students safe. Each day that parents leave their children at school, they are entrusting what they hold most precious into the care of schoolteachers, principals, school resource officers and other staff. With these awards, we honor those who have achieved particularly high standards and set examples that others may follow. We are grateful for their service and commitment to protecting the children of Alabama."
Student Leaders including the Mush mentors, SCA, Ambassadors, National Junior Honor Society were in attendance to hear from Attorney General Marshall.
Board Members, Mayor Choat and City Council, County Commissioner Knight, Central Office Administrators, Police and Fire Officials were in attendance for the Award.
Dr. Berry stated, "This award would not be possible without the support of students, faculty/staff, parents, the Board and our City. Thank you all for your dedication to our students."
Way to go HTMS!

Important Information from the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency....did you know?
We want to remind you that the sirens within Jefferson County are operating on a polygon system.
Our sirens no longer sound county wide when a tornado warning is issued. Only the sirens within the polygon issued by the National Weather Service will sound during a tornado warning!
What does this mean for you?...
If you hear a siren... you are in the polygon and need to seek shelter because you are in the area of danger.
We want to advise everyone to have MULTIPLE ways to receive warnings. The sirens in the county only have an audible range of a mile and a half on a clear day with no obstructions. This means when you add in terrain, buildings, trees, AND the sounds from a thunderstorm... that audible range is reduced significantly. These sirens are also not meant to be heard from the inside of your home and only have an outdoor purpose.
Here are some great alternatives to receive warning information:
NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio
Jefferson County Everbridge Emergency Alert System. Sign up here https://member.everbridge.net/index/453003085611901#/signup
Download an app on your phone that alerts you such as the FEMA app.
