Welcome to Class!
Mrs. Vernon's ESVA 4th-5th Social Studies
Hello Students & Parents!
I am so excited that you are joining our Elementary School Virtual Academy (ESVA) this year and that you're going to be in my 4th-5th Grade Social Studies class! Our class will resume for Semester 2 on Wednesday, January 3rd, and will be all self-paced, asynchronous learning that first week back from Winter Break.
We will be meeting virtually in class together every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 PM or 2 PM beginning on Tuesday, January 10th. (Please check with your IST if you are unsure which class to attend.) You'll also have a few small assignments each week. I will send out a weekly update (typically on Fridays) to give you an idea of what is planned for each upcoming week - both in and out of live class. Please be sure to check out my syllabus below so you know what to expect. Note: Your student will not be held responsible for any assignments due prior to their enrollment in my class.
Lastly, if you are new to Schoology, please view THIS VIDEO to learn about uploading assignments. It will walk you through adding the Kami extension to Google Chrome, as well as other ways that you can upload work.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to meeting you and your student soon! Have a wonderful Winter Break!
Mrs. Vernon
Let me introduce myself...
This is me!
My name is Jennifer Vernon. I was born and raised in Northeast Texas and moved to California in 2007. I received my B.A. in Humanities from Thomas Edison State University and my M.A. in Teaching (Elementary Education) from Western Governors University. I taught in the classroom for four years, primarily at the middle school level. This is now my fourth year teaching for Central Valley Charter Schools. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, photography, watching films, drinking coffee, traveling, and reading classic literature.
My Family
I met my husband, Tom, when we worked together as camp counselors at Hume Lake Camps during the summer of 2011. Back then, we were known respectively as Jiffy and Gumby! After getting married, we spent several years as full-time staff members at the camp, then moved to the Clovis area. We now have a son, Benjamin (3), and a daughter, Chloe (10 months).

How to Prepare for our Year Together
Make sure that you have a reliable device to attend class on, and that it is charged or plugged in. (Cell phones are not acceptable for class time.) A laptop, Chromebook, or desktop computer is needed. If you currently have a device that was issued by the school, make sure it is working properly - including the camera. If it isn’t, please contact tech support for assistance at: help@theaxiagroup.com
Log into Schoology this week. Students should go to virtualacademy.schoology.com and sign in using google. Be sure to use their school-issued Google account! If you haven’t received your login information by the end of the week, please let me know.
Plan a quiet place where you can sit for class: a desk or a table (not in bed). Make sure it's in a location with very few distractions.
