In Fundations we review letters, letter sounds, and handwriting daily. We are continuing to blend sounds together by tapping them out on our fingers, reviewing the vowel sounds, learning sight words/ trick words, and learning digraphs (th, sh, ch, wh, ck) . So far we have learned to read the following words: are, to, a, the, and, is, his, as, has, was, be, we, she, me, & he . Please have your child read these words at home each day for extra practice. In Reading we have completed our Reading Fundamentals Fiction unit, and are currently working on our nonfiction unit. We are discussing nonfiction text features (table of contents, heading/ subheading, bold font, caption, label, words to know, & index), how pictures support the text, and the main idea of a book. Ask your child to point out the nonfiction text features when you read a nonfiction book together at home. In writing we finished our Personal Narrative unit, and wrote nonfiction stories about farm animals. We will continue to use our letter sounds to write words. We call this invented spelling. In writers workshop we continue to focus on finger spaces between words, capitalization, and correct punctuation. We will begin our “How to” unit in Writers Workshop soon. In math we continue to work through unit four focusing on number bonds, addition, and subtraction. Please continue to practice the skills listed on the weekly newsletter. In science and social studies we have learned about animals on the farm, life on the farm, crops on the farm, wants and needs on the farm, and look forward to our field trip to the farm in April. Please continue to read with your child daily and work on the skills from the third nine weeks report card. Don’t forget to pack a water bottle daily. Pictured below you will see ……. Picture #1: class picture from Mrs. Johnson’s class during Read Across America Week, and Picture #2 class picture from Mrs. Perry’s class on “Green Day”.

Third Grade
We had so much fun celebrating Read Across America Week! One of our favorite days was dressing as a famous American. We had Elizabeth Blackwell (first woman in America to receive a medical degree) Katharine Johnson (one of the first black American women to play a role in the Nasa and the space race), Michael Jackson, Aaron Rodgers, and more!
Fourth Grade
In Reading, we just started our final unit: Poetry. Students are getting to read a variety of different types of poems. As they read, they are annotating and taking notes about different types of figurative language and vocabulary they locate in the poem. Students are also finishing up their robot projects from the novel The Wild Robot. Hoping to display these in the 4th grade hallway soon!
In Math, we are still working on Module 6: Decimals. We are making connections to fractions, comparing decimals, and plotting decimals on number lines. After we finish this Module, we will begin Module 7: Exploring Measurement with Multiplication.
In Science, students have been learning about the effects of environmental changes, adaptations and behaviors that enable animals to survive in changing habitats.
Fifth Grade
5th Grade attended our Masonboro Field Trip on Friday, March 18. Students got the opportunity to ride on a boat over to Masonboro Island, explore the island, identify different types of shells, search for blue crabs, review the importance of Ecosystems and learn about the history of Masonboro Island. It was a great experience for all.
In reading, we have continued working on our Poetry Unit. Poetry is a wonderful way to evoke imaginative experiences through fun, rich language. Students have been able to analyze poems by different authors and cultures.
In social studies, students continue to learn about the American Revolution. The importance and outcomes and how it shaped the future.
In math, we have continued working on fractions. Students started learning how to divide fractions.
It is very important that each student knows their math facts. We are continuing to see a struggle in that area and encourage nightly practice to obtain mastery of these very important skills as this will be a skill that is used throughout their educational and life experiences.
In science, we are continuing our weather unit. So far students have learned the difference between weather and climate, the importance of the Water Cycle ( Did you know that you are possibly drinking the same water that a dinosaur did millions of years ago? This was a question that we learned about when we discussed the Water Cycle), the different layers of the Atmosphere, and Air Masses.
