Marsh Testing starts this week
Gator Families,
We have been working hard this year and students will have a chance to show all they have learned on this year's state assessment! Our standardized state assessments will start Monday, April 24th. These important assessment results will be used to help determine future class placements such as honors and intervention courses. We are attaching two slideshows as well as the Principal’s message regarding state testing to help you prepare your student for testing. We have loved watching your students learn and grow this year with us. We hope that your student feels confident and encouraged to do their best on these assessments with school and home support. We appreciate your partnership!

No Hands-on Behaviors
Marsh Parents,
We are needing your support in regards to hands-on behaviors at Marsh. Spring is in the air and we are seeing an increase in hands-on behaviors around campus. Hands-on behaviors are not tolerated at Marsh Jr. as it often leads to someone getting hurt and/or escalates to a fight. Please help us by talking to your Gator about our "hands off" policy. If a student is seen horseplaying and/or participating in hands on behaviors they will receive school consequences. Thank you as always for your support in helping to make our school safe!!
It's National Arab American Heritage Month
Last year, President Biden became the first U.S. president to declare April as National Arab American Heritage Month, in recognition of the contributions of Arab Americans to the United States that are as old as America itself. It celebrates the Arab American heritage and culture and pays tribute to the contributions of Arab Americans and Arabic-speaking Americans.
Join us for our spring concert!

State Testing Is Coming Up - April 24th - May 5th
Gator Families,
Your child will take the computer-based/paper-based California Standards Assessments in Science Assessment (8th grade only) (CAST), 6/7/8 Grade English Language Arts CAASPP Assessment, and 6/7/8 Grade Math CAASPP Assessment. The results of these tests will help determine honors placement, accelerated math placement, as well as intervention and support classes for the coming school year.
Let’s work together to make your student’s experience a positive and successful one! While your Marsh student has been working hard this year to learn the skills they need to be successful on their upcoming test, we need your help to assure your student comes ready and prepared each day.
.
To help support your student’s success during testing please ensure your child:
Arrives to school on time
Eats a healthy breakfast at home or at school
Gets a good night's sleep
Has a snack and water if needed
Brings their charged chromebook and wired headphones (headphones are available at the school site).Wireless headphones are NOT allowed.
Feels encouraged to do their best.

The Marsh PTSO needs your help. PTSO is starting to plan for the 8th Grade Celebration Dance. This dance is dedicated to all 8th graders, celebrating the success of our promoting class.

These generous donations help cover the cost of entrance for all 8th graders, decorations, supervision, DJ expenses, and gifts for the 8th grade class. PTSO is asking that all 8th grade families consider donating $10- $20 to help support these costs. If you are unable to financially support, please consider signing up to chaperone the dance, or help with setup and clean up of the dance.
PTSO values your dedication and generous donations in support of our amazing 8th grade class!

Attendance Matters at Marsh
Addressing Disrespect on Campus
Marsh Jr. High cares deeply about the school culture we create. In an effort to get a "pulse" on the campus we send out student surveys around academics, Social emotional wellbeing, and behaviors during the student's advisory period.
Based upon the last student survey disrespect was one of the major issues on campus. To address this our amazing counseling team with the support of some of our Marsh Gators made a personal message to our Marsh students about respect on campus. ALL teachers showed this video in their advisement classes on Monday, December 5th following the Gator News.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/15Pk4qaOJuixXedMBYhHZfP8ogRaPjrtW/view?usp=sharing
In addition, administration has created a message that will be shared with students any time they have a sub in class. We realize that often the level of disrespectful behaviors increase when the teacher is out of the classroom. This is our attempt to set a clear expectation for our students in the teacher's absence.
Please be sure to have conversations about these expectations with your Gator. As always, we appreciate your support.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kamph

Did you know that Marsh is an AVID School site?
What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an in-school academic support program for grades seven through twelve. The purpose of the program is to prepare students for college eligibility and success.
AVID Elective
The core component is the AVID Elective, which supports students as they tackle the most rigorous classes. For one period a day, AVID students learn: organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.
Furthermore, AVID students become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.
AVID Schoolwide
The AVID instructional program focuses on methodologies that will help students prepare for - and participate in - a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. These methodologies are referred to as WICOR:
W - Writing. Students clarify and communicate their thoughts and understanding of material.
I - Inquiry. Students ask questions which allow them to clarify, analyze, and synthesize material.
C - Collaboration. Students challenge, help, and learn from one another.
O - Organization. Students learn how to organize, retrieve and maintain their materials and data.
R - Reading. Students analyze, question, critique, clarify, and comprehend material.
All of our Marsh Teachers have been trained in AVID WICOR instructional strategies and implement this methodology in the core class setting.
Take a moment to check out more about AVID on our Marsh Website.
AVID WICOR Spotlight
TThis week AVID WICOR spotlight is on Mr. Bishop's History class. This week in History students have been learning about manors and creating their code of arms. his collaborative activity requires each students in the group to take on a role in the manner. For example: Knight, peasant, etc. They then crest a family crest that illustrates their role given. As a culminating activity students will present these to the class.
