Boys' Claxton Flyers are Off and Running! Interested Adult Volunteers Are Welcome!

Our Claxton Flyers' 4th and 5th grade boys' group has kicked off their running season and is meeting twice weekly. The program is designed to inspire boys through the power of running to be themselves, to build healthy relationships, and to live an active lifestyle. Practices lead up to participation in the Hot Chocolate 5K (3 mile) event on Sat, 1/26. Volunteer help is always welcome to support our group! Please contact Tricia Johnson (tiller91@bellsouth.net) or Derek Edwards (derek.edwards@acsgmail.net) if you'd like to get involved as an adult volunteer!

We are looking for parents and community members who are interested in serving as volunteer coaches for a 3rd-5th grade Girls on the Run (GOTR) program at Claxton in Spring 2019! Contact Claxton's Volunteer Coordinator at miriam.scott@acsgmail.net if you're interested in being a part of Claxton's coaching team!

Call for Claxton Auction Donations

Remember to mark your calendars for the Claxton Auction on March 29, 2019. Although it’s a little ways away, we need to start gathering non-cash donations for the auction now. All money collected from the auction goes to fund PTO services, such as playground redesign, food and books for students in need, money for classroom supplies and books, mini grants, staff appreciation meals and gifts, and more.

  • Are you an artist willing to donate a piece of art?

  • Do you have a service to donate (yoga classes, will services, acupuncture, massages, photo sessions, etc.)?

  • Do you have a second home to donate for a weekend?

  • Can you provide lessons as a donation (dance, cooking, sailing, etc.)?

  • Would your place of work donate gift certificates or tickets?

  • Do you have a contact you might be able to ask for a donation?

For inquiries or donations, please contact Lisa Manning at ManningLA@yahoo.com and include the following information:

  • Name

  • Phone Number

  • Email Address

  • Name of Donation Item or Experience

  • Description of Item or Experience

  • Cash Value of Item or Experience

  • Any restrictions on the Item or Experience

No donation is too small or too big, and every dollar we raise goes to Claxton. We appreciate any and all help! Thank you!

Go Local Cards

The 2019 Go Local Cards are now available! For every card purchased ($19) $9.50 goes directly to our Asheville city schools! Now entering its eighth year, the Go Local Card program is Asheville and Buncombe County's original buy-local network. Purchasing a card qualifies you for exclusive discounts and perks - for the full calendar year of 2019 - at over 490 certified locally owned, independent businesses. Browse the business directory at ashevillegrown.com. You can purchase cards from our school secretary/treasurer Cherie Davis (room 101) during school hours (cash or check). Go Local Cards are a great holiday gift idea!

Thanks to Farm Burger Asheville!

Thank you to all who attended and spread the word to friends and family about the Claxton Spirit Night held at Farm Burger on November 29. We had a great turnout and 10% of the evening's proceeds went to Claxton. Farm Burger will be presenting the Claxton PTO with a check for $269.81!

Inclement Weather Policy of Asheville City Schools

(If you aren't receiving text alerts from WLOS for Asheville City Schools closures and delays, we recommend signing up for them here. After entering your contact information, you'll find the 'School Closings' notification section close to the bottom of the sign-up page.)

As we prepare for potential inclement weather conditions that could impact our school day, please understand that SHOULD a decision be made for "No Buses on Icy Roads," the roads below are automatic NO TRAVEL roads. Please remember that a bus driver may use their professional judgment on ANY ROAD they feel is unsafe to travel. We encourage you to speak to your regular bus driver to help determine available alternate bus stops when "No Buses on Icy Roads" has been issued. Historically, these roads are prone to ice, making it dangerous to safely travel in a school bus. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. As a reminder, when a decision is made for “No Buses on Icy Roads" the following roads will never be traveled on by Asheville City Schools bus drivers.

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer! https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule.

All trainings are held at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.
