Blue Bear Notes

Mashburn Elementary - April 2022

Big picture

Dear Mashburn Families,

Woohoo! We made it to spring! As you know, April is always a busy month at school. Our staff is working hard to make sure these last two months of school are filled with learning and fun activities for our students. Please see the information below about our school events for April.

As always, thanks for everything you do to support our school! Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Fonda Harrison

Interim Principal

  • Spring Break

We will be out of school April 4-8. We hope you all have a chance to rest, relax and rejuvenate with family and friends to get ready for these last few weeks of school.

  • Georgia Milestones Assessment

The statewide Georgia Milestones Assessment will occur for grades 3-5 beginning April 25. Parents should have received an email from the district with testing information and dates. Please make sure your children get a good night’s sleep to be ready for the test. Also, to eliminate distractions during testing weeks, we are not allowing visitors into the building as classroom volunteers or to eat lunch with the students. As a quick reference, the grade levels, subjects and testing dates are listed below:

  • Grades 3 & 5: ELA-April 25 & 26, Math-April 28

  • Grade 5: Science-April 29

  • Grade 4: ELA-May 2 & 3, Math-May 5

  • Month of the Military Child

In April we are recognizing all of our students who have parents currently serving in the military. April 15 is Purple Up Day, so we will be encouraging everyone to wear purple in support of our students with military parents. If your child has a parent serving in the military, please make sure their teacher is aware.

  • Class Placement Parent Input Form - Deadline April 30th

Input for your child's class placement for the 22-23 year can be given via the MES 22-23 Class Placement Form. Please know a separate form must be completed for EACH child. Also, note, we are unable to honor any specific teacher requests, do not submit or include any names. Please note the deadline of April 30, no forms will be accepted after that date. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Car Line Volunteer Sign Up

We are still looking for some parents to help with our morning car line. More adults really help the line run much more efficiently! We are asking that volunteers arrive between 7:35-7:40, so that we can share important information about the logistics of the line. Your children can sit inside the cafeteria until the 7:45 bell rings. Here’s the link to sign up for a morning, or more, to help us out! MES Car Rider Parent Sign-Up.

  • Dual Language Immersion (DLI)

Dual Language Immersion is a form of education where students are taught academic content and literacy in two different languages. This program is offered at Mashburn for beginning kindergarteners. The deadline for registration in the program is May 15, 2022. Here is the link for more information about Forsyth County Schools-DLI and the application DLI Application (English), or DLI Application (Spanish).

  • Parent Portal Access

As we get closer to the end of the year, we want to make sure that all of our parents have a Parent Portal account. Access to this account is important at the end of the year, because we no longer send out end-of-year report cards. This account gives parents access to report cards, student attendance, state testing results for grades 3-5, and all school communication that is sent out through Messenger during the school year. One account will allow you to access the information for all of your children. If you do not have an account, please contact Gini Kieffer at 770-889-1630 ext. 752100.

  • Birthday Ice Cream Orders

With supply chain issues and available freezer space, we are requiring that ice cream for birthday celebrations be placed no later than two weeks prior to the celebration. This allows enough ice cream for students to purchase on a daily basis and for party celebrations. The cost for the class ice cream celebration is $30. This is the only approved birthday celebration snack.

Thanks for your understanding!

A Message From Nurse Shannon

Dear Mashburn Family,

Spring has arrived! This is always such a fun and exciting time of year. Just some reminders for you -

  • Please make sure that you change out your child’s spare clothes in their book bag for season appropriate clothing.
  • If you want your child to have sunscreen on, please apply at home before school, and please do not send any sunscreen to school.
  • Some recommendations for the warmer weather is to dress your child in lighter color clothes as it reflects heat.
  • If you wish to send a hat or sunglasses in for outside recess, please make sure your label these items, as well as jackets and water bottles with your child’s first and last name and grade. Please remind your child that sunglasses and hats should be removed while inside the building.
  • Please send your child to school every day with at full water bottle.
  • Please send a light jacket or sweater to school with your child each day. It may be warm outside, however, the classrooms are airconditioned so they may need one so they are comfortable.
  • Please consider sending your child in sneakers and not flip flops. Flip Flops are hazardous for climbing on playground equipment, as well as they do not protect feet from Ant bites and other injuries.

Also, a friendly reminder that this is the season of ALLERGIES, ASTHMA and INSECTS!

If your child has a health condition, please bring his/her forms and medication to the clinic. These forms can always be found on the Mashburn Webpage under the Nurse tab. I am happy to accept these anytime of year. Please be aware that new forms must be completed for each school year. This Summer is a great time to check in with your child’s doctor and have these forms ready for 2022-2023. (Acceptable forms for next school year must be dated after May 31, 2022.)

Please remember to also notify the school if your child has been exposed in the home to others who have tested positive for COVID. Also fill out COVID form linked under Quick Links on our website & linked below if your child tests positive for COVID.

COVID-19 Positive Reporting Form

Thank you for all you do at home to care for your children, and allowing me to care for them while they are here at school. Feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or updates you may have with your child's health. Together we can try to keep our Blue Bears healthy and happy learners!

I hope you all have a fun, memory making, and relaxing Spring Break!
