Alpha Delta Kappa Vol. 1 Issue 3 Sept. 15, 2021
Rachel's Message
September means school is in full swing. I wish a good, good year to all of you that are working in area of education. I stepped away from teaching for a 2nd time this fall semester to devote my time to Alpha Delta Kappa duties and other volunteer positions. I first retired in 2013 from being a high school library media specialist and technology specialist. So I have just re-retired from teaching in the graduate school at the University of Central Arkansas, where I have taught for the last 7 years. So this September has been bittersweet as I settle into a new routine without students involved in my life. I found pleasure in mentoring young librarians across Arkansas and working with peers through our state library organizations. But teaching is just in your blood; I don't have to tell any of you that. I'll be a teacher till I die. Alpha Delta Kappa has supported me as an educator for so many years. I have benefited so much from this organization that I love including grants and scholarships, travel to places I may have never gone, leadership training and a heartfelt sense of sisterhood. Please stick with our sisterhood while we are undergoing a lot of changes to streamline the business part of the organization. I will be glad to work with any chapter on learning about the changes in regional leadership or turning in dues or scholarships on line. If you are a member who doesn't use computers, have a meet up with one of younger girls to make sure your profile is correct so you will receive mailouts when no email is present or have them put the website on your phone and get you logged in to look around. Sisters helping sisters--sharing the love.
Happy Fall,
Rachel
Fraternally,
Rachel

EXCELLENCE in EDUCATION AWARD
Heroes walk among us in many ways. The pandemic has spotlighted those in the medical field. Our armed forces have also been in our thoughts throughout the history of our country. Many of us have heroes within our family and friends. Heroes walk among us in Alpha Delta Kappa. The outstanding educators we have as members deserve honors from the work they do for our students, communities and world. As an honorary organization for women educators, consider those heroes within your chapter, and select some one of them to honor as a nominee for the Alpha Delta Kappa Excellence in Education Award. There are several steps beginning with chapter then state then region then International, and this process will take two years. At your chapter September or October meeting, select a member to honor, follow the guidelines for submitting her application. Look on the website: Membership>Scholarships and Grants> EiE. Copy the nomination form, the adjudication form and the application form. Take these documents to your chapter meeting and when your nominee is elected, then proceed to write the nomination and have her complete the information needed. On or before November 1, go to the site again and complete the form: Once on the EiE page, click on Nomination form. It will take you to the (Kaleidoscope platform) EiE nomination form scroll down and click “Begin”. Once the Nomination forms are complete, Kaleidoscope will send an Application link to all nominees to log in and complete the applications. These links will be sent on November 10th with a deadline of January 15th for submission. Please let me know if I can help with anything.
Faithfully,
Paula O’Neill, Chairman Excellence in Education Award

RMC Nancy Medina's Membership Message
Soon it will be a time of celebration for all Alpha Delta Kappa sisters as October is near and every chapter will be honoring our Founders. Are you ready to “Share the Love” for our organization with others? I hope you will find a way that your chapter can let potential educators become aware of our wonderful sisterhood. Challenge yourselves and your fellow sisters to reach out and spread the word of all we have to offer. Let me share a few ways that you can do so.
• Invite someone to a meeting.
• Give someone the Trifold “The Gift of Membership”. It’s up to date!
• Invite a guest to your local Founders’ Day Celebration. Make them feel welcomed.
• Share with a friend an altruistic opportunity sponsored by your chapter.
• Meet a friend or two for breakfast and start the day out right by sharing something about
your involvement in Alpha Delta Kappa.
• Visit the school of your child or grandchild and take a small thank you token to the
educator of your child. Include a thank you note with information about your chapter or the sorority. Try to keep information on hand.
• Take a treat into a school during the month (donuts are always welcomed) and
put a sign next to your treat “Compliments of your name and chapter.” Place flyers/pamphlets nearby with information about ADK that they can take with them.
• Put a treat in each teacher’s mailbox. Attach a clever note to catch their attention. Life Savers “You are a lifesaver for our students” or Sweet Tarts - “You are a Sweetheart – come visit Alpha Delta Kappa”. Attach a card about your chapter or a personal note
• Retired teachers can drop into your local school and volunteer for a community activity or to help in the classroom. Take a few cards or informational pamphlets that you can leave in the office or teachers’ lounge. Don’t forget to wear an Alpha Delta Kappa volunteer badge!
These are activities that you can do all year long. Don’t stop with October. Many of you have probably read about these ideas but have you done them? Imagine what fun it will be to include new members in your chapter. It will be worth the effort!
Hugs,
Nancy

MEET THE I.T.E. BOARD
Sherryl Longhofer, ITE Board Chairman
My name is Sherryl Longhofer and I am currently serving as Chair of the Board for this biennium. I reside in Topeka, Kansas and am a member of Kansas Epsilon. I have served all levels; local, regional and International level. My most memorable experience, was getting to serve my South Central Region as their International Vice- President and the incredible travels I was able to take to meet sisters in my region. I was appointed to the ITE board in 2017, and at that time, I thought six years sounded like light years away, and now here I am chairing the board, serving my 5th and 6th year .
I am married to my husband, Larry for 56 years, and have two grown sons who continue to make us very proud and two incredible grandsons, what more can I say, I am a mother and a grandma (Mimi). I retired from education in 2004, having taught emotionally disturbed children, K-6, for 19 years and spending my remaining years as an elementary school guidance counselor. Education was very good to me as I was finalist for Kansas Teacher of the Year and Kansas Master Teacher along with various local honors. Alpha Delta Kappa has played such an unbelievable part in my life. The sisters whom I have met and bonded with, the experiences I have had and the numerous opportunities to assume leadership roles, all of which made my appointment to the ITE scholarship program a dream come true.
Judy Tate, ITE Board Past Chair and Current Member
My name is Judy Tate, and currently serving my 3rd and 4th year on the board. My husband Morris and I live in Manassas, Virginia and we have a daughter Valerie, who is married and has teenage twin sons and a son in college. I am blessed to have them only half an hour from us. My early life was largely spent abroad, living in Tokyo and Germany. Living on Hawaii’s Oahu and Big Island provided us with wonderful experiences with a broad set of cultures.
My appointment to the ITE Board in 2019 has been a gratifying step in my Alpha Delta Kappa journey, beginning with Virginia Tau chapter where I served as chapter president, chair of various committees and currently VA Tau’s membership chairman. On the regional level, I have served as the chairman of the Southeast Regional Conference and as SER Excellence in Education Chair. My service on the International level includes chairing the Educational Symposium at the Convention in Washington, D.C. and chairing the Balloting Committee in Salt Lake City. I have been a frequent presenter at conventions and conferences at each of these levels.
I retired from education after teaching in Oklahoma, Hawaii and Northern Virginia. I also spent more than a decade working in public relations and development with the Mental Health Association of Hawaii, along with the Girl Scout Council of the Pacific. I have also been involved with the National Women’s Political Caucus in Washington, D.C.
Barbara Eason, New ITE Board member
I live in Vienna, VA with my husband, Tom and our dog, Jacks. We have 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
I taught elementary PE in Loudoun County, VA and now teach Senior Fitness for Fairfax County, VA.
I have enjoyed having many leadership positions in Alpha Delta Kappa at the chapter (historian, president-elect, president), district (District President, Historian), state (Sargent-at-Arms, Historian, Corresponding Secretary), and international level.
I was a co-sponsor for an ITE student 2010-2012. I have been International World Understanding Chairman and on the International Resolutions Committee. I was also co-convention manager at the 2013 International Convention in DC. I am currently President of VA Alpha Tau.
