February Belle River Elementary Newsletter
Belle River Sailors are safe, respectful, kind, and good friends!
January was an exciting month for our Belle River Students! The cold and snowy month was filled with powerful instruction inside our warm classrooms delivered by our wonderful teachers. Students enjoyed lessons about Martin Luther King Jr, melting snowmen, snow globes, Tacky the Penguin, Electricity, Rocket Math, teen numbers, -ed endings, maps and location, story problems, colonization and settlement, and much much more! Belle River is a great place to LEARN!
Winter According to Humphrey: Each Belle River student received a copy of Winter According to Humphrey to share at home with his/her family. We enjoyed daily questions and prizes (Thank You PTO). The boys and girls shared their thoughts and wonderings and even did some writing about our new furry friend. We were super excited when the real "Humphrey" came to visit us too. We wonder what adventures he went on at night while we were home reading! Thank you all for participating and supporting our One School, One Book adventure. We look forward to another book during the month of March!
SMILE Pendants: Mrs. Milligan was awarded a grant for a school community project and all of our students and staff here at Belle will benefit from this exciting project. The fifth graders created smile pendants for our school community at Belle River. They are available to those kiddos who need a smile for whatever the reason. Some pendants can be worn and some can fit in pockets. They do not need to be returned and are a special gift to students who may just need a little reminder to smile. The students can take them home with them or keep them in their backpack. Way to go Mrs. Milligan and 5th graders! We are so proud of a job well done!!
Global Play Day at Belle River: On Wednesday, February 7th our students will participate in Global Play Day from 1:30-3:30.
What is Global Play Day? On February 7th, our school will be participating in Global School Play Day 2018 from 1:30-3:30. GSPD has been promoted by Psychology Today and is being celebrated at schools around the world. You can learn more about the benefits of unstructured play by visiting the official GSPD website: http://www.globalschoolplayday.com/
We are inviting all of our students to bring in things to play with on this very special day. Here are some examples of things your child may bring in (Be sure your child’s name is clearly marked on all items):
Non-Violent Toys (no weapons)
Legos, blocks, cardboard boxes, etc.
Dress-Up
Puppets
Stuffed Animals
Board Games
Puzzles
****NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES*****
If it has a plug or batteries please leave it at home for this event!
DANCE-A-THON: Our PTO is sponsoring a wonderful fundraiser for our students at Belle River. Please remember that our whole school Dance-A-Thon will take place on FEBRUARY 15th! Your donations and support of this event will be greatly appreciated.
Cold Weather: Please be sure your student(s) dress appropriately for outside play. We will continue to line up outside in the mornings and go outside for recess as long as temperatures allow us to do so. The "stay inside" temperature is "feels like" 0.
