Marine Ecosystems

Positive Impacts
Artificial Reefs
Artificial reefs are beneficial to marine ecosystems because they provide habitats to many animals. They also reduce beach erosion from storms and they produce much needed oxygen and store carbon dioxide. Reefs are beautiful to look at and attract new species to the ecosystem.
Marine Sanctuaries
Marine sanctuaries are beneficial to oceans because they protect vital habitat to many ocean organisms. Sanctuaries are dsignated areas of oceans that are protected from fishing, mineral exploration, and other human activities that could be harmful. Sanctuaries provide the necessary protection for animals, such as humpback whales, when they are giving birth and raising their young.
Fishing Regulations
Regulating fishing in our earth's oceans is important because it provides protection for fisheries and allows their numbers to rebound if they become too low. Without regulations, the world's fisheries are becoming depleted and many species we depend on could go extint. For regulations to be effective, international cooperation is necessary. If only a few countries comply, the regulations will be weakened.
